[email protected]. For seven years, starting in 1991, the rugged Jack Lord, know n as the rugged Steve McGarret on Hawaii 5-0 was basically non- responsive. His loyal wife would turn his wheelchair to the ocean as he starred blankly at sunrises and sunsets. After his series ended in 1980, Lord kept a low profile, rarely making public appearances.
Steve McGarrett suffered a double blow with the death of Cathi Ryan. First was finding her dead in her home, murdered by a hired gunman. Second was fighting for his own life as he worked to prove his innocence as her suspected killer.
Explaining her absence, we learn that she would remain in Afghanistan, devoting her time to search for the son of the man who saved her life. Following on from that, she turned up at such events as Kono and Adam's wedding, and she would then leave McGarrett soon after.
In the season nine premiere, it is revealed that he has broken up with Lynn.

Danno's ʻohana Rachel and Danno rekindled their love at the end of season one and almost moved back to New Jersey together. But Rachel reconciled with her husband Stan, and had another child, Charlie — ironically, delivered by Danno– who turned out to actually be Danno's son.
In the episode “Is Borne on the Back; Is Borne in the Arms,” airing tonight at 9/8c, it is revealed that Adam's wife Kono — who for over a year has been chasing sex traffickers on the mainland — has given him the hook.
Danny started off on the Five-0 Task Force as the only team member with a child. In fact, this nickname, Danno, was what his daughter Grace (Teilor Grubbs) called him since age three when she could not say his name, and all that came out was “Danno.”
McGarrett says "lots of chicks" visited Hennessy. Another interesting camera shot in Hennessy's grave at his funeral. Zulu as Kono Kalakaua seems rather subservient to McGarrett. When McGarrett tells him to "find the Quong girl" who knew Hennessy, Kono says, "Yes, sir.".
Wo promises not to engage in any "medieval Chinese torture.". As McGarrett begins to unwind during Wo Fat's deprogramming, he calls Wo Fat "Fatso.". Fortunately, McGarrett has been "pre-programmed" by Jonathan Kaye's ace hypnotist and is able to save the day in the best James Bond fashion.

The Singapore File (Season 2) One of my favorite episodes. McGarrett gets a call from a witness in Singapore, Nicole Wylie (Marj Dusay), who has had a change of heart about testifying against the Hawaiian gangster Revasco. McGarrett flies to Singapore and escorts her home, overcoming various odds on the way.
Randall Kim , who appeared only two episodes earlier as John Lo, plays Oscar, a pickpocket. McGarrett is disgusted by Persoff's mocking attitude, screaming "Shut up!". at him. The headline in the newspaper at the end -- Headline Trial Witness Dies -- has no relation to any of the stories in the paper.
McGarrett goes off on his own, snooping around, and is extremely noisy when doing so! He later reports to the Governor, played by Lew Ayres, and James Gregory as Jonathan Kaye, who is "Chief of Pacific Operations, Counterintelligence.". During their discussion, Kaye says that McGarrett has two presidential citations.

Lieutenant Catherine "Cath" Rollins, USN (Rtd.) is the on-off lover of Steve McGarrett. How or when they met is never fully explained, but it has been implied that they have known each for a long time. It has also been implied that they met during their time at the Naval Academy.
Steve asks Catherine out to the Army-Navy Gala at West Point. He calls her after a mission in Afghanistan lands him in the hospital. Catherine is seen working in Operations on a Navy ship (potentially the U.S.S Enterprise) when she receives the call. She says yes to going out with him.
She is then taken hostage and her captors use her phone to call Steve. Her captors demand that they get their people back or Catherine will never be seen again. Catherine yells for Steve to not do it and is slapped across the face and kicked in the gut. Her captors gives Steve 10 minutes to release his people before hanging up.
Catherine made her debut appearance in Lanakila when Steve calls her for a favor. Catherine tells Steve he's like the good-looking guy from high school who knows how cute he is and just won't take no for an answer. Chin is impressed with Steve's multi-tasking skills getting Catherine to both recon a satellite and agree to a date.
She tells him she needs a rain check on dinner because orders came in and she's being sent to the gulf that night. She tells Steve the DOD hasn't received anything from Joe White. As she goes to leave Steve tells her that when she gets some leave time in the next few months they should meet halfway like in Mumbai. She smiles and tells him she likes Indian food. Both looking sad, they share an emotional goodbye hug.

It was said that he "only takes orders from the Governor and God – and occasionally even they have trouble". McGarrett had a sister Mary Ann ( Nancy Malone ). Their mother was murdered by criminals when they were young. It was revealed that this personal tragedy was what motivated McGarrett to become a police officer.
Despite the fact that he is no longer on full-time active duty, McGarrett's military background and SEAL training are still evident in his daily routine and habits; he still takes a " Navy shower " , keeps his house impeccably neat and tidy, maintains a fitness regimen and is extremely sensitive to sound even when asleep. His military mannerisms are also apparent in the way he approaches his cases, some of the lingo he uses and his ability to remain calm even when under intense pressure, and he is frequently mocked by Danny for his lack of "human" touch. In later seasons he becomes more affable around the other task force members and would be seen cracking jokes with other team members. Despite his stoicism, he has a soft spot for children, especially his adoptive niece Joan and Danny's children Grace and Charlie, both of whom often refer to him as 'Uncle Steve', and is extremely protective of his younger sister Mary.
In "No Ke Ali'i' Wahine A Me Ka Aina", Steve and Danny, along with an MI-6 officer ( Chris Vance) are awarded the George Cross by Queen Elizabeth II for stopping a terrorist attack against Europe.
Steve is said to be fifteen or sixteen in 1992, which roughly corresponds with the fact that he was in BUD/S in the year 2000. A star quarterback, he attended the fictional Kukui High School before being sent to the Army and Navy Academy in California for his junior and senior years after the death of his mother.
Based on McGarrett's flashbacks and statements from other characters, he had a happy childhood and enjoyed spending time in the garage watching his father fix the antique 1974 Mercury Marquis. He inherited his father's passion for antique cars and occasionally drove the Marquis after fixing it up himself.
In the episode "Bait Once, Bait Twice" (1972), it is revealed that McGarrett's only predictable routine is a Tuesday haircut. Often an episode would include the iconic line, "Book 'em!". as McGarrett would solve a crime and oversee the arrest of a perpetrator.

In the end, Jack was no longer the debonair, commanding authority he once played on television, but his devoted friend, Doversola, is convinced that, to Lord, Hawaii was truly the star of the show, and the actors were just simply telling the stories that emanated from the Islands of Aloha.

She was one of a dozen friends present during the scattering of Jack’s ashes from a two-man canoe in the waters off the Lords’ Kahala condo. The most memorable was when he was a merchant marine looking to buy a home in upstate New York. He came across an old house with character. Jack knocked on the door and a sophisticated French lady by the name of Marie De Nard answered. She was a strikingly elegant dress designer, some eight years his senior. De Nard invited him in, and in the course of Jack trying to convince the homeowner that she should sell him the house, they got to be more than good friends and ended up tying the knot.
She was Marie’s lunch mate and often brought brown rice to their home from health food stores. “Marie was into healthy living way before it was a trend, and Jack always had funny stories to tell,” she recalls. The most memorable was when he was a merchant marine looking to buy a home in upstate New York.
In the early seasons, we knew very little about Steve McGarrett. He was almost too perfect. He was dressed and coiffed to perfection, worked in the big office, and drove the big car. We were told almost nothing of his personal life, except that he had told Rosemary Quong that he'd never been married ("Cocoon," Pilot).

More than once, he stormed out of John Manicote's office in protest of either the district attorney's or the judge's insistence that more evidence was needed. Even so, he went back to the drawing board and found the evidence needed to obtain a solid conviction.
McGarrett took this a step further in "Number One With a Bullet" (Season 11), when he explained his dedication to law enforcement to Los Angeles mobster Allie Francis (Nehemiah Persoff). He explained that, when he was thirteen years old, he stood beside his mother in the rain while his father's body was laid to rest. A gunman had shot and killed the elder McGarrett while making a getaway from a supermarket holdup. Steve said that each time he arrested someone like that gunman, he felt he was doing something for his father.
In several episodes, we saw that McGarrett owned a sailboat and spent much of his free time working on it. McGarrett took Cathi Ryan sailing in “Man in a Steel Frame” (Season 9); he wrapped and covered a sail in "Oldest Profession : Latest Price;" he mended a torn sail in “You Don’t See Many Pirates These Days” (Season 10); and he applied varnish to the wooden handrails in “The Case Against Philip Christie” (Season 11). But, hey ho! The star of the show was a deck officer in the Merchant Marine and an honorary commodore in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. We could see that in the way he climbed between ships and boats in "Follow the White Brick Road" (Season 4) and "Charter for Death" (Season 6) and took the steps aboard ships “Murder – Eyes Only” (Season 8), among others.
In "My Friend the Enemy," McGarrett revealed his ability to speak and understand Italian. After replying in Italian to her “Grazie” for saving the princess’ life, he explained in Italian with English subtitles, “I grew up with Italians,” as did Jack. Similarly, in “FOB Honolulu” (Season 3), we heard McGarrett give Mischa Toptegan (Roger C. Carmel) a farewell greeting of “Do svidaniya” (until we meet again). In “Presenting…in the Center Ring…Murder” (Season 7), we saw McGarrett listening as Soong Chien (James Hong) spoke to Ling (Norman F. C. Tang) in Chinese. And, so, we learned that McGarrett spoke at least four languages, including English.
In “Man in a Steel Frame” (Season 9), we learned still more about McGarrett’s personal life when Cathi Ryan (Camilla Sparv) was murdered in an effort to frame and discredit him. Although we saw her home, a 1970s contemporary beach house, we did not see his home. We did see parallels to Jack’s life. Cathi, like Marie, was a fashion designer. Cathy, like Jack, had lost her child tragically. And, of course, Cathi’s surname was the same as Jack’s.
