Though he could face a sentence of up to 65 years, according to a CNN report, Rick Singer is not yet in prison. “Operation Varsity Blues” (OVB) indicted coaches and administrators from eight universities for accepting bribes in exchange for admitting fraudulent athletes. As part of the conspiracy parents paid university officials to admit students with little-to-no sport experience as college athletes.

The investigation and related charges were made public on March 12, 2019, by United States federal prosecutors. At least 53 people have been charged as part of the conspiracy, a number of whom pleaded guilty or agreed to plead guilty.
Authorities became aware of the scheme around April 2018 when Los Angeles businessman Morrie Tobin, who was under investigation in an unrelated case for alleged pump-and-dump conspiracy and securities fraud, offered information in exchange for leniency in the previously existing, unrelated case. Tobin, who attended but did not graduate from Yale, told authorities that the Yale women's soccer head coach, Rudolph "Rudy" Meredith, had asked him for $450,000 in exchange for helping his youngest daughter gain admission to the school. As part of his cooperation with the FBI, Tobin wore a recording device while talking to Meredith in a Boston hotel on April 12, 2018; Meredith subsequently agreed to cooperate with the authorities and led them to Singer. Meredith pled guilty as part of his cooperation with the prosecution. Tobin has not been charged in this case, but in February 2019 he pled guilty in the unrelated securities fraud case. US sentencing guidelines, to which judges often refer when deciding sentences, call for between eight and ten years behind bars. According to The Wall Street Journal, Vanity Fair, and CBS, prosecutors are recommending 36 months of supervised release. In addition, Tobin has agreed to forfeit $4 million as part of his plea deal. Tobin was scheduled for sentencing at a hearing in June 2019, but this did not in fact take place.
The playing field is not fair. For example, Jane Buckingham was arrested on March 12, 2019, for allegedly submitting false paperwork saying her son had a learning disability, and paying $50,000 to Key Worldwide Foundation for a proctor to take the ACT on her son's behalf, scoring a 35 out of 36.
In response to the scandal, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the chief governing body for college sports in the United States, announced plans to review the allegations "to determine the extent to which NCAA rules may have been violated".
Thirty-three parents of college applicants are accused of paying more than $25 million between 2011 and 2018 to William Rick Singer, organizer of the scheme, who used part of the money to fraudulently inflate entrance exam test scores and bribe college officials.

Of course, the most serious exposure he faces is from the criminal charges. The maximum punishment for conspiracy to commit wire fraud is 20 years in prison.

An anonymous student, listed in court documents as Yale Applicant 1, has had their admission to the university rescinded. The student’s family paid $1.2 million in bribes to have the student admitted as a purported soccer recruit with an endorsement from coach Rudy Meredith. (Another student who also applied via the soccer scheme was ultimately denied admission.) The student was, according to CNN, already attending Yale when the school rescinded their admission.
Stanford announced it rescinded the admission of an anonymous female student admitted via the college admissions scheme. Her application included faked sailing records, the Stanford Daily reports, and a $500,000 donation to the university’s sailing program.
Fourteen of the people charged in Operation Varsity Blues , including Desperate Housewives star Felicity Huffman, pled guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud. “Prosecutors, as part of a plea deal, agreed to recommend a prison term at the ‘low end’ of the four to ten months Huffman faces under federal sentencing guidelines. She also agreed to pay a $20,000 fine and restitution,” Reuters reports.
Prosecutors say Caplan paid $75,000 to have his daughter’s ACT score doctored after she took the test. (She received at 32, having never scored higher than a 22 on a practice exam.) Prior to the indictment, Caplan was co-chairman of megalaw firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher. He has since been placed on leave.

Giannulli, a first-year student at USC who is also a popular influencer and YouTuber with millions of subscribers, reportedly has “no plans to return to USC,” a source close to the family told People. “She can’t handle anything right now. She seems more and more upset every day.
Many have been sentenced to penalties ranging from probation to nine months in prison. Fifteen other parents, including the actress Lori Loughlin, have pleaded not guilty and appear headed to trial, possibly this year.
Michelle Janavs, who received a five-month sentence on Tuesday, said her daughters were banned from their high school campus and events like graduation and prom, according to her lawyers.
A spokeswoman for the school declined to comment, citing student privacy. Ms. Janavs was sentenced on Tuesday to five months in prison after she pleaded guilty to two counts: money laundering conspiracy, and conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and honest services mail and wire fraud.

Talwani called Caplan one of the least culpable defendants in the entire case but nonetheless an "active" participant. She noted how Caplan threatened the ACT after the testing company objected to extra testing time received by his daughter to facilitate the cheating.
Singer's associate Mark Riddell, a private school counselor from Florida, flew to California and corrected answers on his daughter's ACT exam while acting as a test proctor. Caplan asked Singer to make sure her daughter got a score of 32 out of 36 on the ACT. Her previous high score was 22.
