Oklahoma Attorney General Resigns, Citing ‘Personal Matters’. Attorney General Mike Hunter announced his resignation one day after The Oklahoman said it had sent him questions about an extramarital affair.
Gov. Mary Fallin had appointed Mr. Hunter to serve as attorney general in February 2017 after Scott Pruitt, the previous attorney general, resigned to become administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency under President Donald J. Trump.
Hunter was one of a number of Republicans who joined in support of a lawsuit filed by the Texas attorney general that challenged the 2020 election results in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin, four states that Mr. Trump had lost to President Biden. The Supreme Court rejected the lawsuit in December.
Mr. Hunter also served six years in the Oklahoma House of Representatives, representing District 85 in Oklahoma City, according to his office.

Under the state Constitution, Gov. Kevin Stitt, a fellow Republican, can appoint Mr. Hunter’s replacement to serve until the next election in 2022, Mr. Stitt’s spokeswoman, Carly Atchison, said. “The Attorney General informed me of his resignation this morning and I respect his decision to do what he thinks is best for his office and the State ...
His abrupt announcement came after The Oklahoman said it had sent him questions on Tuesday night about an extramarital affair that it said it had confirmed through people familiar with the situation. Mr. Hunter, a Republican, filed for divorce on Friday from Cheryl Hunter, his wife of 39 years, the newspaper reported.

He supervised the investigation of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, which killed more than 160 people and injured several hundred more. Garland also led the investigations of the 1996 Olympics bombing in Atlanta, in which two people died and more than 100 others were injured.
Sharpton responded to the Garland pick with a skeptical statement and asked for a meeting with the nominee.
Defenders of Garland argued he would be a particularly strong choice to lead the Justice Department in the post-Trump era because he is seen as above reproach of partisan politics. Some allies describe him as a “Boy Scout,” which is intended to suggest he would be seen as a non-political figure.
The announcement of the attorney general, along with other senior leaders of the Justice Department, is expected to be made as soon as Thursday as Biden moves closer to filling the remaining seats in his Cabinet before assuming power on January 20.
Garland was chosen by Biden for attorney general over former Alabama Sen. Doug Jones and former acting attorney general Sally Yates, the two other finalists for the position.

Garland said the probe into the attack would be his No. 1 priority.
Gupta has been targeted by the conservative Judicial Crisis Network, which has accused Gupta, without evidence, of wanting to defund the police. Those arguments were largely defanged, however, after major policing groups, including the Fraternal Order of Police, came out in support of the civil rights leader last month.
Garland is known to the public largely as the face of Senate Republicans’ successful bid to stonewall former President Barack Obama ’s effort to replace Justice Antonin Scalia on the nation’s highest court.
At his hearings last week, Garland pledged to remain independent from Biden when it comes to the Justice Department’s investigations and prosecutions. Garland said he had not spoken to the president about an investigation into Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, related to the younger man’s tax affairs.
