Jul 13, 2021 · Many Ace Attorney fans will know that The Great Ace Attorney was released in Japan and that initially, there weren't any plans for localization. There were a variety of reasons and speculation for this, but most importantly, it was clear that localizing a game so steeped in Japanese culture would be a massive undertaking.
In the English-language translations, the story is set in Los Angeles, and various characters travel to and from Europe, usually Germany. In the original Japanese versions, the events mainly take place in Japan, and the destination of most foreign travel is the U.S.
Development. The localization of the games adapts the story to take place in an alternate-universe Los Angeles in which Japanese culture has been allowed to flourish and blend into American culture, instead of being met with fierce historical resistance as in real life.
Development. Capcom, the company responsible for the Ace Attorney series, is headquartered in Osaka, Japan. The original setting of the Ace Attorney series is Japan.
The "present-day" episodes of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations take place between 2018 and 2019, so Memories could take place in 2013 or 2014. A natural solution would be to consider Turnabout Beginnings, which takes place "6 Years Ago".
Story. Phoenix Wright belongs to a Japanese bloodline of lawyers dating back from the Meiji era, something he is currently unaware of. In his childhood, he made friends with Larry Butz and Miles Edgeworth.

Early brainstorming suggestions for Phoenix's name included "Cole" and "Wilton", but "Phoenix" was chosen as a name that would "stand out". The nickname "Nick" (used by his partner, Maya Fey) was chosen based on its believability and similarity to the sound of "Phoenix".
During a case seven years prior to the events of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, two months after Trials and Tribulations, he was forced to forfeit his attorney's badge after presenting evidence that, unknown to him, was forged.

Cases tend to be localized within the city, though some take place well outside city limits, such as Kurain Village and Flight I-390. The main characters of Ace Attorney are lawyers who investigate crime scenes and then take their evidence to court. Throughout the stories, these lawyers work under an intricate system of rules in the crime scene as well as the courtroom .
" Turnabout Prosecutor ") place the player in the role of Phoenix Wright's rival, a genius prosecutor named Miles Edgeworth, as he investigates crime scenes using evidence collection, logic, and arguments.
The fourth title, Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, was built for the Nintendo DS from the ground up, and starred a new lawyer, Apollo Justice. Mechanics from Rise from the Ashes made a return in various capacities in this game and in subsequent games. The practice of including an English mode was discontinued, the English localization only appearing in international releases. Because the games were now being localized, Takumi returned to avoiding the use of Japanese-specific plot points in this game, though he felt that the yakuza-themed Kitaki clan would make sense to international audiences.
Takumi was inspired by Western mystery fiction, most notably Perry Mason, an American work about a fictional defense attorney who operates in much the same fashion as Phoenix Wright. This inspiration would later go on to inspire the naming of the " MASON System " in Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney.
The first Gyakuten Saiban (later localized as Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney) was conceived and created by a small team led by Shu Takumi.
Since 2019, the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy, Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney HD, and The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles have been released or are in the process of being released internationally on multiple platforms, including PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Steam, and Xbox One, though Chronicles is not planned to have an Xbox release. Chronicles includes English translated versions of the Dai Gyakuten Saiban duology, with the individual games being titled The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures and The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve .
The fourth game, Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, which features the new protagonist Apollo Justice, was released in 2007. The fifth game, Dual Destinies, was released in 2013, and a sixth game, Spirit of Justice, was released in 2016. Two spin-off games starring Miles Edgeworth, Ace Attorney Investigations and Ace Attorney Investigations 2, were released in 2009 and 2011, and two featuring Phoenix's ancestor Ryūnosuke Naruhodō, The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures and The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve, were released in 2015 and 2017. A crossover with the Professor Layton series, titled Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, was released in 2012.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is a visual novel adventure game developed by Capcom Production Studio 4 and published by Capcom. It was released in 2001 for the Game Boy Advance in Japan and has been ported to multiple platforms.
The story follows Phoenix Wright, a rookie defense attorney who attempts to have his clients declared "not guilty". Among other characters are Phoenix's boss, Mia Fey; his assistant and Mia's sister, Maya; and prosecutor Miles Edgeworth.
It has been credited with helping to popularise visual novels in the Western world. A manga series premiered in 2006, a film adaptation of the game, titled Ace Attorney, premiered in 2012, and an anime series adaptation began airing in 2016.
The localization of the game was outsourced to Bowne Global, and handled by writer Alexander O. Smith, who was unfamiliar with the Ace Attorney series before working on it, and editor Steve Anderson. While the Japanese version of the game takes place in Japan, the localized version is set in the United States. Normally the setting would be left vague while cultural differences the target audience would not understand would be adapted. Because one of the episodes involves time zones, however, they had to specify where the game takes place and chose the United States without thinking a lot about it. This became an issue in later games, where the Japanese setting was more obvious. Bowne Global staff handled all the voice roles in the localized version; Takumi had wanted to do the English voice for Phoenix, but Ben Judd handled it.
A crossover with the Professor Layton series, titled Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, was released in 2012. A manga based on the game, written by Kenji Kuroda and drawn by Kazuo Maekawa, premiered in 2006 in Bessatsu Young Magazine.
A cross-examination in the game, showing the witness on the top screen. The player can move between statements, press the witness for details, or present evidence that contradicts the testimony.
Los Angeles, California, a city in the U.S., is home to prosecutor Miles Edgeworth, who since 2012 has left a mark as one of the top prosecutors in the country, along with brief stints prosecuting in other countries.
The United States of America (commonly referred to as the United States, the U.S., the USA, or America) is a country situated mostly in central North America. The USA is one of the member states of Interpol. By 2019, the government had passed the " Federal Firearms Restriction Act ", restricting the ownership of guns. This made it impossible to acquire a gun legally outside of law enforcement. By 2026, gun ownership by most people other than cops or members of the mob was considered impossible.
Legal system. Main article: Legal system. The initial trial system used in lower-level U.S. courts consists of fast-paced bench trials lasting no more than three days , with the judge giving the final verdict. The conviction rate in these trials is notoriously high.
One of the many reasons why The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is so hotly anticipated is because of its director, Shu Takumi . Shu Takumi is the legendary director and scenario writer for the original Ace Attorney Trilogy, as well as Ghost Trick: Phantom Device.
In this game, players control Ryunosuke Naruhodo, who is actually an ancestor of Phoenix Wright. New fans don't need to know anything about the rest of the Ace Attorney games to enjoy these ones, however.
The agreed-upon crown jewel of the Ace Attorney series, Trials and Tribulations allowed players to act as three different attorneys throughout the game while also bringing back important characters that make sense in the plot, rather than “just because." If being able to play as Mia Fey wasn't enough to earn first place on this list, then Phoenix Wright's college backstory most certainly is.
In this game, players act as a new character, Apollo Justice, representing a passing of the torch from Phoenix to his “apprentice” figure. This signalled that Phoenix’s saga had come to a close (or so it seemed to indicate), and players were able to see characters grow and evolve during the 7 years that had passed since the last game.
Hayley Mullen (116 Articles Published) Hayley Mullen is a writer, composer and gamer from Toronto. While at school, they worked as a radio show host playing video game jams during the prime studying hours of 12-2 am. Having played over 700 hours of Pokémon Emerald, they are a true lifetime fan of the series.
With many fans expecting a sequel to Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney (and many fans disliking the new character), Capcom took a very different route. The first main series game on the 3DS, Dual Destinies arguably has one of the most fantastic soundtracks for a 3DS game, with renowned composer Noriyuki Iwadare at his best.
A welcome addition to the series, Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth is the first full game to feature Miles Edgeworth as a protagonist, a complex character (and fan-favourite). Having been playable for a short period in Ace Attorney: Trials & Tribulations, it was almost inevitable that Edgeworth would receive his own series of games. The prosecutor's inner thought process is a delight to watch.
Another hidden gem of the Ace Attorney series, many have played Ace Attorney Investigations 2 through the outstanding fan translation available online. Not only is this another Japanese-exclusive game in the series, but it also stands out as another sequel better than the original.
Justice For All is a worthy sequel to Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, though it excels in different ways than its predecessor. The intrigue of Edgeworth's disappearance combined with the introduction of a new Von Karma creates a curiosity that can only be sated by pouring over every word of the game. Akemi Kimura does a phenomenal job composing music for every mood and scenario, leaving a lasting impression for weeks afterward.
That is a misconception. An appeal means that a higher court will review the facts of the case, and never the same court. As we can clearly see, the same judge presides over both trials.
Maggey Byrde, defended by our beloved Phoenix Wright, is convicted of the murder of Glen Elg. However, Byrde’s defense attorney isn’t Phoenix Wright, but an impostor with a cardboard badge (No kidding). This means that the defendant does not have a proper lawyer.
The Double Jeopardy Clause means that if someone is prosecuted once for a crime, they can’t be prosecuted again for the same crime. It doesn’t matter whether they were acquitted or convicted. This is true both under the American Law system and the Japanese Law system.
A mistrial is a cancelled trial that can happen for a number of reasons. Usually something goes pretty badly at the first trial, which violates the due process of law. A second trial brings justice to the ones who need it. The first instance of a retrial happens in the “ Recipe for Turnabout ” case.
That’s not how double jeopardy works! Of course it’s not possible for a single person to be in two different places at the same time. If the prosecution wanted to convict him of murder, no one could prevent them from putting him on trial. Atmey’s attorney would happily present his alibi. Though, once the court found out the alibi was a fake, there is nothing preventing him from getting convicted of murder.
It would be a retrial if Tenkai is put on trial once again, but he isn’t. Manfred von Karma forged evidence at that trial. This would make it a mistrial and open the possibility of a retrial for Tenkai. But that’s not the case here. Due to the nature of the spin-off, we don’t get to see the actual trial.
Retrials are not that easy to get. On top of that, Athena Cykes had been only 11 years old at the time of her mother’s murder. Japan’s age of criminal responsibility is 14 years. She could not be tried as an adult in this “retrial” anyway. Also, just as in “The Inherited Turnabout” mentioned above, they are not putting the same person on trial. Hence, it can’t be a retrial. This time, there’s not even forged evidence to classify the first trial as a mistrial.
