The reason for this is that our criminal justice system is structured around the idea that the truth about a case is being presented. If you do not tell the truth, it undermines the justice system.

Although the civil court has limited power to punish your spouse for perjury, the judge can forward the case to the prosecutor for criminal enforcement.
