WASHINGTON — Donna R. Andrieu, an assistant district attorney in New Orleans, had the unenviable task at the Supreme Court on Tuesday of defending her office’s conduct in withholding evidence from a criminal defendant. She made the least of it.
Justice Sotomayor made a broader point about the office, which has repeatedly been found to have violated Brady v. Maryland, the 1963 Supreme Court decision that requires prosecutors to turn over favorable evidence to the defense.
The case, Smith v. Cain, No. 10-8145, arose from a mass murder in 1995, when a group of men burst into a house in search of money and drugs. They ordered the occupants to lie down and opened fire, killing five people. Juan Smith was the only person tried for the killings.
Prosecutors presented no DNA, fingerprint, weapons or other physical evidence. Unknown to Mr. Smith’s lawyers, Mr. Boatner had said conflicting things in interviews with the police. Just after the shootings, he said he could not describe the intruders except to say they were black men.
BOSTON – A Connecticut man who held positions involving facility maintenance at three collegiate institutions pleaded guilty today in connection with receiving bribes in exchange for directing contracts to favored contractors.
The contractors inflated the amount of the invoices submitted to the collegiate institutions in order to be repaid the cost of the bribe payment made to Young. In addition, as contractors received payments for work done at the collegiate institutions, they paid Young bribes on a periodic basis.
The charging statute provides for a sentence of up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss. Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based upon the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Tragic death: Evelynne Deuman was found unresponsive with a condom in her mouth on the floor of her home. Deuman wasted valuable time from the moment he found his baby daughter until he called an ambulance. He later told her mother Natasha Maitland that she had choked on a used condom.
In August 2011, baby Evelynne Deuman was found in the bedroom of their mobile home bleeding from the nose, unconscious and not breathing. Sick: Deuman was convicted of killing his three-month-old daughter while he was sexually assaulting her in August 2011.

Throughout the trial, he maintained he put his daughter on the bed while he went outside for a cigarette. When he came back she was lying on the floor not breathing with the discarded condom in her mouth. Subsequent tests showed the DNA on the outside belonged to the baby and on the inside belonged to Deuman.
Shelly Stallings, 42, of Morganfield, was arrested Feb. 16 in Owensboro and charged with various offenses in connection with the Capitol riot, including assaulting officers and civil disorder.
Joseph Irwin of Cecilia, Kentucky, was arrested and charged Aug. 17 with unlawful entry and disorderly conduct in a restricted building and disorderly conduct and parading/demonstrating in the Capitol building, the FBI's Louisville office said.
