THE JUDGE is a powerful movie about Hank, a defense attorney, played by Robert Downey, Jr., returning home after his mother’s death. Downey’s character has a rocky relationship with his father, played by Robert Duvall. When the father is accused of murder, the two men have to reconcile and learn to love each other.
Duvall debuted in To Kill a Mockingbird and appeared in many popular films of the 60's, Bullitt, True Grit, The Chase; then went on to play the consumate Tom Hagen in both Godfather and Godfather II, followed by tour de force appearances in Network and Apocalypse Now.
Blackwell was a kid who the Judge went light on. After Blackwell did minimal time, he killed his girlfriend. Then the Judge threw the book at him.
The judge gets four years in prison, but is released in less than a year. A little later, Hank and his father are on the lake fishing. While talking, the Judge passes away in the boat, but not before telling his son how proud he is of him, giving Hank some vindication and acceptance from his father, finally.
