Due to feedback that Dual Destinies gave too many hints to the player, the developers aimed to have fewer direct clues in Spirit of Justice. Additionally, while Dual Destinies only allowed the usage of the "Examine" feature in specific locations, investigation segments in Spirit of Justice allow the player to "Examine" any environment, more akin to the other games in the series. Spirit of Justice nonetheless inherits several elements from Dual Destinies, such as investigation notes, the Mood Matrix, anime cutscenes, and revisualization. The anime cutscenes are produced by A-1 Pictures (the animation studio that produced the anime adaptation ), rather than Bones .

For the purposes of this article, I have looked over each major Ace Attorney game and spinoff. Every game has its own details on when events take place, allowing them to be described on a case-by-case basis. If simply going through the games according to when they (mostly) take place, this would be the best order to go about it.
Trying to follow the games as they happen can be a little more than challenging, as you can see. Part of why the series is structured like this is to fill in some gaps, set up interesting plot threads, and provide simple tutorials that still allow fan-favorite characters to show up.

The story of Spirit of Justice is set roughly one year after its predecessor, Dual Destinies, and once again focuses on defense attorney Phoenix Wright and his two understudies Apollo Justice and Athena Cykes. While previous games in the series have been set in Los Angeles, California(Japan in the original Japanese releases), Spirit of Justice sees Phoenix travel to the fictional kingdom of Khura'in, a deeply religious nation where the art of spirit channeling originates.
