Nov 15, 2020 · The question “What would you do for a Klondike bar?” became popular after the publicity of the Vanilla Ice cream that had also a layer of chocolate. Klondike is the brand that created the ice cream also simply known as Klondike Bar. The ice cream was founded by Isaly Dairy Company located in Mansfield, Ohio in the first part of the 1920s.
The year that the Klondike Bar was first mentioned in the press, in an issue of the Youngstown Vindicator. The product, launched by the Isaly family that year, was one of many regional hits for the Ohio dairy firm. The company was known for its regional dairy stores and restaurants, which sold sandwiches noted for their incredibly thin slices of processed ham, called “chipped chopped ham.” The book about the company’s history also touches on some fairly dark points in the firm’s history, including the suicide of Chester Isaly — who apparently felt pressured to keep his family’s regional business competitive in a dairy market that was increasingly becoming nationalized. By the 1970s, Isaly was on the ropes — but it had something the rest of the country would want.
— Businessman Henry Clarke, who at one time owned the Klondike brand through his company Clabir, speaking about the experience in the book Klondikes, Chipped Ham, & Skyscraper Cones: The Story of Isaly’s. Clarke turned the brand — at one time an obscure ice cream novelty that existed only in parts of Pennsylvania and Ohio — into a national success through smart marketing. Clarke was not a dairy man, really: Clabir, which was named after both himself and his mother, was an absurdly diversified company that included interests in both the dairy aisle and the defense industry — a formula that at one point gave the firm a buzz on Wall Street. Clarke, who died in 2013, was eventually forced to sell off the Klondike brand and its parent company Isaly, and was later kicked out of the company he founded.
