At 11:10 p.m., 45 miles south of Nantucket Island, the Italian ocean liner Andrea Doria and the Swedish ocean liner Stockholm collide in a heavy Atlantic fog. Fifty-one passengers and crew were killed in the collision, which ripped a great hole in the broad side of the Italian vessel.

The Andrea Doria lies off Nantucket Island in Massachusetts near the Nantucket Lightship. She is in 160 feet of water with strong currents and low visibility. Being a famous luxury liner, she is a popular dive site for recreational divers, but a very challenging one nonetheless.

Many believed the Andrea Doria was “unsinkable” (Does that sound familiar?) because of its double hull with 11 watertight compartments. Any two of the watertight compartments could fill with water and the ship would not sink. This ship also had enough lifeboats for everyone on board, unlike the Titanic. But she still sank.
