Although he is acquitted, Barba decides that it is time to move on, after 21 years as a prosecutor. He is replaced by Peter Stone (Philip Winchester). Barba is later seen in the 21st season episode "Redemption in Her Corner", video chatting with Benson while he is investigating voter fraud in Iowa.
But just like Stone, the way Cutter was written on SVU never serviced his character. He had moved positions to become a Bureau Chief and his personality completely shifted. Perhaps it was because that wasn't his show, but the writing blunted his edge and never captured his personality.

Well, almost. In Season 19's "The Undiscovered Country," ADA Barba reaches his limit and resigns after a case proves too traumatizing, even for him. The case involves a missing infant, which leads the SVU squad to find itself in the middle of a family's right-to-die case.

When a woman (Lisa Emery) comes forward, claiming that the boy was her brother, they reopen a cold case involving three murdered Puerto Rican boys in which the prime suspect (Richard Bright) worked with an accomplice (Ruben Santiago-Hudson).
Benson is on her way out for the evening when a call comes in from a little girl named Maria (Jeanine Monterroza and Rachel Diaz-Stand), who says she is all alone in a locked room. While trying to draw the girl out, Benson is drawn deeper into the little girl's life. Although the other officers begin to suspect that the whole thing is some sick joke, Benson is convinced that the little girl is telling the truth. By talking to Maria, Benson is able to ferret enough information to get a place to start, but Maria's captor (Christopher Evan Welch) has an affinity for electronics and has done everything he can to make sure that no one can find the little girl he bought and paid for.
When a college girl (Tess Soltau )'s body is dumped in an area frequented by prostitutes, Stabler and Tutuola realize she had far more money than a student on financial aid should, and they learn that she was deeply involved in the world of online gamblingand high-stakes poker. Suspects include the victim's roommate (Trieste Kelly Dunn) who is seen wearing an expensive ring, an athlete (Mathew St. Patrick) from whom the ring was stolen and the victim's childhood friend (Will Estes). Stabler makes a special plea for the latter when stories of the young man's childhood are reminiscent of Stabler's own.
Anderson would go on to portray Detective Kevin Bernard on the original Law & Order series from 2008 to 2010. The following episode "Web" showed Connor Paolo return to the series after guest starring as a different character in the fourth season.
Sonny goes to law school at night and enjoys having legal banters with Barba. As they talk they encounter Lisa Hassler, Hoda’s new lawyer. She took over Hoda’s case after he fired Mr. Guthrie.
Present at the hearing were Olivia, Laurie Colfax and Dolores Rodriguez, mothers of Hoda’s victims. However, instead of providing Judge Hashi Horowitz an allocution for his aforementioned crimes, Hoda rejects the deal. While at chambers, he claims his innocence and insinuates he was coerced into making a confession.
On their way to court, Olivia and Barba meet Dr. Huang on the steps and the two former colleagues have a short chat. We learn that Dr. Huang has now retired from the FBI and does consulting. Barba goes on to inform Olivia that Hassler hired Dr. Huang as expert forensic psychiatrist for the defense in Hoda’s trial.
Olivia and Fin remember the auxiliary cop, Officer Stephen Lomatin who noticed the arson pattern Spoiler! which led detectives to Hoda when they were investing Wyatt’s disappearance. Fin said Lomatin still keeps in touch with Detective Amanda Rollins and would only be willing to talk to her.
Olivia and Barba talk to Laurie and Dolores about recent developments. Barba’s strategy is to go to trial with their strongest case first – Wyatt Morris’ abduction. Upon learning that Wyatt has to testify against Hoda at trial, Laurie refuses to let her son go through this ordeal since he hasn’t completely gotten over the trauma of his abduction. Dolores pleads to Laurie but the latter still refuses to help despite expressing her empathy for Hector’s mother. This leaves Barba no other choice but to try Hoda for Hector’s abduction and murder.
Law & Order: SVU Season 17, Episode 9 ends with Sonny in the hospital with Amanda. Olivia drops in to visit. Suddenly Amanda cries as she feels contractions. She struggles in pain. A nurse who came immediately calls for a doctor. Amanda is hemorrhaging and the fetal heart rate is slowing. The doctor rushes in and, ushers Olivia and Sonny out of the room. The scene cuts to Amanda laboring while the doctor and nurses administer to her as the episode ends.
Back in court, Lomatin was being questioned by Hassler on the stand. It is clear the counselor is trying to implicate Lomatin for Hector’s murder. Hassler presented that during their investigation, Law & Order: SVU found Hector’s photos and that of other boys in Lomatin’s home.
