Powers began his career in 1983 as an associate of the Law Offices of John Ross. He then served as an associate of Rosch & Rosch, Esqs. from 1985 to 1986 and as a partner of Arnold & Powers, Esqs. from 1986 to 1992. He served briefly in 1993 as an assistant town attorney of Glenville, New York, before starting his own law office. He worked as a self-employed lawyer through 2001. In 2002, he joined the family court bench.
