Jul 09, 2020 · Several attorneys in Jacksonville, Florida, filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the city in an attempt to block the Republican National Convention from occurring there amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Attorneys and other citizens of Jacksonville, Florida, filed a lawsuit against the city, Republican National Committee and Trump campaign Wednesday to try and stop the upcoming Republican National Convention in August, as concern grows over holding a massive in-person convention at an epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic.
The lawsuit, brought by Jacksonville residents who live and work near VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena, where the convention is set to be held, argue that the convention will be a “nuisance injurious to the health, welfare and property rights” of the plaintiffs and “result in massive spread of Covid-19 among the persons in attendance and throughout the City of Jacksonville and Northeast Florida.”.
In a statement to Forbes, RNC spokesman Mike Reed said the organization is “committed to holding a safe convention that fully complies with local health regulations in place at the time” and is “planning to offer health precautions including but not limited to temperature checks, available PPE, aggressive sanitizing protocols, and available COVID-19 testing.” “We have a great working relationship with local leadership in Jacksonville and the state of Florida, and we will continue to coordinate with them in the months ahead,” Reed said.
The impending Republican convention has become a major point of contention within Jacksonville and Florida ahead of the August 24-27 event.
The Jacksonville lawsuit comes after another coronavirus hotspot city successfully shut down a planned political convention over the danger it could pose to public health.
