“The Avvo Rating is our effort to evaluate a lawyer’s background based on the information available in an attorney’s Avvo profile. We create the rating using a model that considers information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to information we collect from public sources like state bar associations and lawyer websites. Any information that affects the Avvo Rating is visible in an attorney’s profile.”
Avvo ratings are calculated using a mathematical formula that evaluates the content on an attorney’s profile. However, Avvo will only give credit for what is posted on your profile, so it’s a good idea to keep it updated regularly. Below are all of the sections that need to be filled out in your Avvo profile: About Me.
If you are licensed to practice in more than one state, indicating so on your profile will increase your score a full point, even if it was in the past.
One thing to keep in mind – Avvo does not delete any reviews. This includes anonymous and incorrect reviews.
In addition to your rating, Avvo will also assign a contributor score to every attorney. You can increase your contributor level by either answering questions on Avvo’s legal forum, or by publishing legal guides to their blog. Once again, these two scores are entirely separate and choosing not to contribute will not affect your Avvo rating in any way.
The options for the first question are: 1 Fellow lawyer in community 2 Worked for lawyer 3 Supervised lawyer 4 Worked together on a matter 5 Opposing counsel on a matter 6 Co-Worker 7 Friend 8 Family Member 9 Other
An Avvo rating is a 1 to 10 score used by Avvo.com – an online directory of lawyers – to rate individual attorneys based on the contents of their Avvo profile. A lawyer whose Avvo profile is fully filled out, and also includes awards, speaking engagements, and recommendations from other attorneys, will have a high Avvo rating.
The Avvo Rating is calculated using a mathematical algorithm that evaluates the information in your profile. If it’s not in your profile, then we don’t know about it, and if we don’t know about it, then we can’t give you credit for it.
You can increase your Avvo Rating by a full point if you add additional state bar licenses. Even if it was in the past you should add it (assuming you were not disciplined by the state bar). If you were disciplined by another state bar, adding it would dramatically decrease your score.
Avvo has a massive legal Q & A forum. When logged into your Avvo profile, you can contribute answers to questions categorized in your practice area. While this can help showcase your expertise, it will not help you increase your Avvo Rating.
Legal guides are probably the biggest waste of time of Avvo. Not only do they require a lot of work to publish, there are not a lot of opportunities for that content to get seen due to the volume of duplicate topics and content.
If you don’t add dates to an award or a speaking engagement Avvo will automatically assume the oldest date possible, and cause you to lose valid points.
Avvo lets you add photos and video on your profile. Add a professional headshot and add a short video introducing yourself to prospective clients. Answer frequently asked questions, and give people a taste of what working with you would be like.
If you’re a lawyer, you will have a profile by default on Avvo. The system fills unclaimed profiles with as much public data it can find from state bar associations, court records or lawyer websites.
Avvo has a Quora like question format, except the questions here are very specific. Your profile can get a major boost if you invest in the time to answer open questions regularly asked on the site.
Client testimonials DO NOT influence your Avvo ranking. However, reviews and ratings by past clients do influence people who might be looking to hire you, and not having a testimonial might render a high Avvo rating moot.
Work experience. What legal-related work have you done since you graduated from law school? The Avvo Rating factors in the type of work experience as well as the number of years you have practiced. This can include leadership positions that you have held with legal associations (e.g., your state bar).
Fill out your Avvo profile to maximize your score. A surprising number of lawyers claim their Avvo profile and then do nothing to make sure it accurately reflects their credentials and experience. Take a second to make sure that the information we have and that you’ve provided is correct in your license and education sections.
