The agency is more concerned about claimants and reducing its backlog than it is about its employees. Productivity expectations are ridiculously high for attorneys, who are treated more like clerical workers than law professionals. In its effort to quickly reduce its tremendous backlog, attorneys (decision writers) are pushed to write decisions as if they worked in an assembly line, with emphasis placed on quantity rather than quality of work. Thus, they take away any possible enjoyment or pride from the work done. It has been quite a disappointment to work there.
Overall very positive experience. A Social Security Administration hearing office (SSA ODAR) is one of the best places to work as an attorney. For the work that is done the pay is very high and the federal benefits are very good. This is in contrast to the pressures of private practice.
