The game is a crossover between two games series from both developers, combining the puzzle and exploration elements of Level-5's Professor Layton series, and the general trial mechanics of Capcom's Ace Attorney adventure series, the latter enhanced by the addition of a few new elements.

Miles Edgeworth is a character appearing in Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney as well as various games of the Ace Attorney series.
Currently there are six games in the main series, all of which have been released outside Japan. Additionally, there have been three novels as well as an animated movie, Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva. The series has been financially successful, with over 15 million units having been shipped of the games alone.
