5. Lawyers are admired more for their honesty (and/or humanity) than winning. We all know those lawyers who are aggressive, confrontational, disagreeable and just plain unlikeable. People may dislike dealing with them or fear them, but they are rarely admired. Think carefully when you choose how to deal with your colleagues, clients and the court. Would you rather be admired for your honesty and integrity or feared because you are a jerk?
We are only required to do the best we can and that is always enough. If practicing law is not for you, you can do something else. If you are good at it but aren’t having fun, you need to get your mind in proper working order. When practicing law gets dicey, that is the time you need to be grateful.
1. Do not be a prisoner of your past. What happened in your life is a lesson, not a life sentence. We are our own jailors, and our minds are the key. You do not have to obsess over events that were painful or not what you wanted. You are not a victim, so don’t act like one.
It may come as a surprise, but most successful people do not focus on worst-case scenarios, they focus on the best thing that can happen. Admittedly, if you are stressed, angry or depressed, it is difficult to focus on positive thoughts.
what success means to them, and they intentionally create that success in every area of their life.
As an officer of the court, you have an obligation to review facts before you state them on the record. If you feel pressured for time, ask the court for a moment to review your notes or the file. You don’t want to be in a position where your statement of the facts is ever questioned.
Spurious motions may sound like a great idea when you’re new. You actually don’t think they’re spurious. You may think they’re new and interesting, and you want to show your peers that you’ve got the “right stuff” to be a lawyer. Unfortunately, your baseless motions just make you look like you’re trying to obstruct.
I know, I know. This can be tough when you’re working with a bunch of new lawyers who are trying to prove themselves, and you’re angling for partner at your firm.
Why? You’ll save time and look like you know what you’re doing. Judges love that. Also, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed as a new attorney because you’re rarely given the tools you need to make your life easier.

Warren Buffett believes “the difference between successful people and really successful people is that really successful people say no to almost everything.”. As a young attorney, it is important that you attend CLE and legal workshops within your area of practice. Never stop learning. That applies to learning how to be successful, too.
In many ways, being a young attorney is just like any other job – the little things matter. If you want to be viewed as a professional, act like one. It may sound obvious, but professional behavior such as being on time, dressing appropriately for the situation, and responding promptly to phone calls and emails sends a message that you’re taking the job seriously and want to succeed.
Many young lawyers falter in their early assignments simply because they failed to manage their time well, not because they were incapable or lacked knowledge. Law is unquestionably a demanding profession, and learning to juggle those demands as soon as possible is crucial to success.
Some senior attorneys are good at giving young lawyers feedback, but others are not . If you’re not getting the feedback you want or need to make you a better lawyer, don’t hesitate to ask for it. Feedback is crucial to improving your work in the future, and seeking it out shows the people you work with not only that you care about the case, but about the success of your career as a whole.
