His surname is a reference to his personality. It could also be a reference to the term " fair play " used to describe mystery stories that give the audience all of the clues needed to solve the mystery from the outset. The mysteries in the Ace Attorney games are fundamentally not fair play, as they rely on the gradual collection of clues via evidence and testimony.
Bruce Fairplay is an English banker. He was a witness in the murder of Mortar Milverton. He was later the first juror in the tri als of Soseki Natsume .
Bruce Fairplay is strong-willed, stubborn and a little full of himself, but he holds true to his name and he knows when to back down in a fight he knows he'll lose. He is incredibly rational gentleman and does not like false charges. He also is a man of his word, as seen when he changed his verdict when he promised he would.
After hearing Barok van Zieks, Fairplay agrees that Herlock Sholmes ' inventions, regarding the handprints as proof that William Shamspeare blew into the gas pipe, do not count as official evidence. Ryunosuke Naruhodo suggests they listen to Soseki Natsume about it, as he's been having gas leaks.
Two days later, Miles decided to continue as a prosecutor, and to use his position to fight the contradictions and abuses from which the law suffered. Shields saw the same determination in the younger Edgeworth that Gregory had, and wished him well on his new path.
Eventually, Miles was removed from the investigation by Justine Courtney and replaced by Sebastian Debeste, who went on to try to indict Simon Keyes for Knightley's murder. Shields agreed to defend Keyes and headed to the detention center again. To his surprise, he encountered Miles in the hallway. Miles asked to act as Shields's assistant in order to continue investigating. Shields replied that he did not take on assistants, and that he did not trust Miles. However, he agreed to Miles's offer after Gumshoe and Faraday vouched for him, saying that he had forsaken his old ways that had been influenced by von Karma.
Edgeworth's client was the famous television chef Jeff Master, who was accused of murdering fellow chef Isaac Dover during a confectionery competition held at Master's mansion. During their investigation, Edgeworth and Shields met the infamous prosecutor Manfred von Karma, who was leading the police investigation. Von Karma saw the pair as mere pests and actively stifled their attempts to investigate.
The next day, Are'bal was arrested for trespassing; as he had locked his passport in his suitcase, he was considered to have entered the country illegally, but the charges were lifted shortly thereafter. In court, he became a suspect for the professor's murder, as he had been seen leaving the scene of the crime, but was soon cleared when Apollo Justice and Wright figured out that Atishon was the real killer during a civil trial between the two attorneys.
Datz Are'bal is a former paratrooper who joined the Khura'inese rebel group known as the Defiant Dragons. Although eventually captured by the authorities, he managed to escape from prison at around the same time that the apparent murder of Tahrust Inmee was occurring.
Due to Justice's efforts, not only was Dhurke proven innocent of Inga's murder and the attempted assassination of Amara Sigatar Khura'in over twenty years prior, but also revealed that Ga'ran was unfit to rule Khura'in owing to her lack of the necessary spiritual abilities that the royalty of the country must possess by law. Following the trial, Are'bal asked Justice to stay in Khura'in to reopen Dhurke's law office and help them rebuild their justice system, to which the latter agreed.
Are'bal then returned to Khura'in, where he and Beh'leeb led a protest group at Tehm'pul Temple to demand the release of Dhurke and the rescinding of the Defense Culpability Act, after Dhurke had been arrested for the murder of Inga Karkhuul Khura'in. Are'bal was put in charge of ensuring Dhurke's safety, but lost sight of him during the trial that followed. It would later be revealed that Dhurke had been killed before their trip to the United States to retrieve the Founder's Orb, and was instead being channeled by Maya Fey.
An impressed Are'bal told him about the revolutionary group's true nature and gave him a key to a hideout the Inmees had prepared at the Inner Sanctum. After Fey was cleared of all charges, Are'bal and Dhurke caught up with Beh'leeb at the Hall of Justice.
To ensure Wright was not acting as a spy for Queen Ga'ran in return for leniency , Are'bal knocked Wright out and brought him to the hideout, where he pretended to be defecting from the rebel group and intending to sell rebel secrets to Justice Minister Inga Karkhuul Khura'in.
During his time in the group, Are'bal came to befriend Nahyuta Sahdmadhi and Apollo Justice, Dhurke's biological and foster sons, respectively. Justice was eventually sent to the United States for his safety.
