Tim Fox ( Republican Party) was the Attorney General of Montana. He assumed office on January 7, 2013. He left office on January 4, 2021. Fox ( Republican Party) ran for election for Governor of Montana. He lost in the Republican primary on June 2, 2020.
Six days later, the limits were reinstated by the Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals. In that time, Fox received a $32,000 donation from the state Republican Party as well as $12,000 from individual donors in excess of the limits. Under state law at the time, political parties could donate up to $8,150 to candidates for attorney general, while individual donors could give $310. His opponent in the race, Pam Bucy (D), filed a lawsuit on October 25, and Fox returned the excess donations.
Fox won election as Montana attorney general in 2012. He defeated state Senator Jim Shockley in the June 5th primary election and defeated Democratic primary victor Pam Bucy in the general election on November 6, 2012.
Fox said he was the first Republican elected Attorney General in 24 years and referenced his experience in the position, saying, "I have stood up to federal overreach, I have protected the unborn, and I have defended our Second Amendment rights.".

Montana law dictates the duties of the attorney general and his or her legal staff. That law stipulates certain things the attorney general may not do. He or she: does not direct or supervise state agencies other than the Department of Justice.
These attorneys represent state agencies in lawsuits, represent Montana’s interests in complex civil cases where the state is a party, and prosecute criminals throughout the state to assist local county attorneys – particularly in complex cases or homicide cases. Some attorneys have special expertise in certain areas, like the death penalty, Internet crime against children or Montana’s laws protecting consumers and small businesses. Attorneys in the Office also provide legal assistance to state and local government on matters involving American Indian jurisdiction and federal reserved water rights. Others review – and in some cases, defend – constitutional challenges filed against state laws. Finally, lawyers in the Office provide legal services to the eight other divisions of the Montana Department of Justice.
Opinions issued by the attorney general hold the force of law unless overturned by a district court. Opinions are researched and written by assistant attorneys general for final approval by the attorney general.
The division’s Appellate Services Bureau handles appeals of criminal matters, including death penalty cases, and represents the state in federal court when constitutional challenges are made to a criminal conviction.
You’d be hard-pressed to identify prominent Montanans with more different resumes than the two major party candidates hoping to be elected Montana’s next governor this fall, succeeding term-limited Democratic Gov. Steve Bullock.
