The story is split into five cases.
In the original Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy and Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, the sequence simply ends with the Capcom logo before returning to the title screen. The game remembers the fact that it has been completed, and text can be skipped accordingly on subsequent plays.
There are five episodes in this game, each one beginning with details of a murder and the defendant accused of the crime. Phoenix Wright attempts to clear the defendant's name throughout the episode in a series of phases. One phase involves collecting information that will help prove his client is innocent.

The localization of the game was outsourced to Bowne Global, and handled by writer Alexander O. Smith, who was unfamiliar with the Ace Attorney series before working on it, and editor Steve Anderson. While the Japanese version of the game takes place in Japan, the localized version is set in the United States. Normally the setting would be left vague while cultural differences the target audience would not understand would be adapted. Because one of the episodes involves time zones, however, they had to specify where the game takes place and chose the United States without thinking a lot about it. This became an issue in later games, where the Japanese setting was more obvious. Bowne Global staff handled all the voice roles in the localized version; Takumi had wanted to do the English voice for Phoenix, but Ben Judd handled it.
A crossover with the Professor Layton series, titled Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, was released in 2012. A manga based on the game, written by Kenji Kuroda and drawn by Kazuo Maekawa, premiered in 2006 in Bessatsu Young Magazine.

Turnabout Reclaimed also features a bad ending that can be achieved by depleting the Confidence Gauge during Marlon Rimes 's testimony where he claims he saw Orla Shipley kill Jack Shipley (Trial, Day 2, first Cross-Examination). If Wright cannot prove that Orla did not do this, then the judge will declare Sasha Buckler innocent, whilst Orla is subsequently found guilty and put down soon after.
This often occurs because the player has "lost" in a manner other than having his or her client pronounced guilty.
The Judge declares Phoenix's failure to prove that Pearl Fey is Rayfa Padma Khura'in, and asks the Bailiff to bring the real Rayfa to the courtroom to be handed over to the terrorist. Ashamed, Phoenix flies back to the United States, hangs up his Attorney's badge, and returns to his life as an amateur pianist.
At the end of Turnabout Succession, the player is put in control of Jurist no. 6, who is given the opportunity to decide the fate of Vera Misham. If the player selects "Guilty", the verdict is postponed due to a hung jury.
