I'm on my phone, so I can't get a link, but on the Capcom Investor's site, (which I got to by typing "Ace Attorney Copies Sold" into Google) it shows that AA5 sold over 5 million copies worldwide. Sadly it doesn't have numbers for the earlier games, but I think the data from Dual Destinies is what matters most to both Capcom and their investors.

While almost nothing compared to handheld stablemate, Pokémon, which had 14.9 million copies sold worldwide of X & Y, it’s still way more than your typical visual novel, most of which struggle to even hit the million sold mark. Still, it’s sold a lot more than fairly popular and respected franchises, such as Virtua Fighter and Baldur’s Gate, both of which are largely cult classic titles even today in their native countries – Phoenix Wright’s popularity stems worldwide. Of course, plenty of those sales are to do with Capcom re-releasing the games on different platforms that suit the titles, with the Nintendo DS being the main handheld to enjoy the glut of games in the series. The first three games in the series, later known as the Phoenix Wright Trilogy, were Japan-only releases on the Game Boy Advance before being individually updated and translated for the Nintendo DS worldwide with added touch controls – and they proved popular enough for Capcom to create more.
You’d be forgiven if you haven’t heard a lot about Capcom’s Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney series. Known in Japan as Gyakuten Saiban (Turnabout Trial) it’s not a catch-all game like FIFA, but along the franchise’s almost 15 year lifespan, it’s steadily grown a cult following that’s dedicated to creator Shu Takumi’s visual novel, lawyer-sim, and it shows no signs of slowing down. With a weird cast of ever-growing characters, including attorney Phoenix himself, his assistant Maya, his rival Miles Edgeworth and his protegé Apollo Justice, the well-established characters have been in the minds of franchise fans for well over a decade, and there’s plenty more in store for series stalwarts.
There are over 240,000 lines in Ace Attorney: Apollo Justice, making it longer than the first three individual games, while the original trilogy has a staggering 570,000 words in total – the first game has 210,000 words, the second has 160,000 words, and 200,000 words make up the third title. That’s more than the entire The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which has around 473,000 words in total, while each game has more content to digest than the first Harry Potter book, which is approximately 77,000 words. And who said games don’t get you reading?
You might know the Ace Attorney games as being mainly Nintendo DS titles, but you can get your lawyer fix in several different ways. The first three games were Japan-only GBA releases, and you can still track down a cartridge and attempt to play, although you’ll have much better luck with the DS releases instead, or even the Trilogy Collection on the 3DS.
The long-running series has a cast and crew that are very recognisable to fans of the series, so much so that Capcom has crafted spin-off titles that either include Phoenix and crew, or taps deeper into what made the series successful. Ace Attorney Investigations, and its sequel Gyakuten Kenji 2, took fan favourite prosecutor Miles Edgeworth, teamed him up with the almost-useless Detective Gumshoe and propelled them into their very own investigatory game that puts a new spin on familiar elements we’ve seen in the main games to date.
The First Turnabout ( はじめての逆転 Hajimete no Gyakuten ): In his first case as a defense attorney, Phoenix Wright, with the help of his mentor Mia Fey, defends Wright's childhood friend Larry Butz after he is accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend.
Phoenix Wright is a rookie defense attorney who is the main character and playable protagonist of the game. Maya Fey is Wright's second client and Mia's younger sister. After the events of Turnabout Sisters she becomes his defense aide.

It was released in Japan on December 15, 2009, and in the US on January 11, 2010, consisting of the first four cases with Rise from the Ashes was released separately on March 16, 2010 in Japan, and on May 24, 2010 in the US.
Miles Edgeworth is the main antagonist for most of the game. He prosecutes against Wright in Turnabout Sisters, Turnabout Samurai and Rise from the Ashes. He is also Wright's client in Turnabout Goodbyes. Mia Fey is Wright's mentor and acts as his defense counsel during The First Turnabout.
