The attorney general also may appear before the Supreme Court. In addition to the U.S. attorney general, there are attorneys general in each of the 50 states.
Legally and constitutionally, the Attorney General absolutely does not work for the president. He is just another cabinet officer who has been nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate, and works for the American people and specifically heads the department of justice, which has many agencies that work under it.
