Apr 02, 2005 · Meursault's Lack of Emotion Ultimately Lead to His Death. The novel begins with the funeral of Monsieur Meursault’s mother. A vigil is held at night for his mother; however, Meursault shows no emotion the whole evening. This is rather unsettling to me to think he showed no compassion or sadness at his mother’s vigil.
Meursault is also honest, which means that he does not think of hiding his lack of feeling by shedding false tears over his mother’s death. In displaying his indifference, Meursault implicitly challenges society’s accepted moral standards, which dictate that one should grieve over death.
