Description. If players agree to play for ante, at the beginning of the game, before drawing starting hands, each player puts a random card from their library into the ante zone. The winner of the game receives permanent ownership of all the cards in that zone.
The original design of Magic included an "ante" option, wherein before the game started, each player would pick a random card from their library, and that card was set aside (removed from the game). Players played the game, and the winner got to keep both cards (changing literal ownership).
When Magic received its very first ban list in January 1994, all the ante cards were banned. The last card to be printed was Timmerian Fiends in Homelands at the end of 1995.
