Ace Attorney is a series of adventure video game legal dramas developed by Capcom. The first entry in the series, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, was released in 2001; since then, five further main series games, as well as various spin-offs and high-definition remasters for newer game consoles, have been released. Additionally, the series has seen adaptations in the form of a live-action film and an anime, and has been the base for manga series, drama CDs, musicals and stage plays .
The Ace Attorney Investigations spin-off series splits the gameplay into investigation phases and rebuttal phases , the latter of which is similar to the courtroom trials of the main series. During the investigation phases, the player searches for evidence and talks to witnesses and suspects. Things the player character notices in the environment are saved as thoughts; the player can use the "logic" system to connect two such thoughts to gain access to new information. At some points, the player can create hologram reproductions of the crime scene, through which they can discover new information that would otherwise be hidden. Ace Attorney Investigations 2 introduces "logic chess", where the player interrogates witnesses in a timed sequence that is visualized as a game of chess, with the player aiming to destroy the other character's chess pieces. To do this, they need to build up their advantage in the discussion by alternating between speaking and listening, and then choose to go on the offensive.
It was released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2015 in Japan; it has also been released for Android and iOS in 2017 in Japan. The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve is the second entry in The Great Ace Attorney series.
The series currently consists of six main series games and five spin-offs.
The Ace Attorney series has been credited with helping to popularise visual novels in the Western world. Vice magazine credits the Ace Attorney series with popularising the visual novel mystery format, and notes that its success anticipated the resurgence of point-and-click adventure games as well as the international success of Japanese visual novels. According to Danganronpa director Kazutaka Kodaka, Ace Attorney ' s success in North America was due to how it distinguished itself from most visual novels with its gameplay mechanics, which Danganronpa later built upon and helped it also find success in North America.
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is a compilation of both Adventures and Resolve to be released in July 2021 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Microsoft Windows. This will be the first time both games are officially available outside of Japan.
The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve is the second entry in The Great Ace Attorney series. It was released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2017 in Japan; it has also been released for Android and iOS in 2018 in Japan.
Ace Attorney is a franchise centered around a series of visual novel / adventure hybrid video games developed and published by Capcom . It began as a trilogy of comedic legal thrillers known as Gyakuten Saiban (逆転裁判; lit. "Turnabout Trial") created by Shu Takumi and released for Nintendo 's Game Boy Advance handheld game console in Japan between ...

Many articles will contain spoilers for potentially any Ace Attorney media, which are, for the most part, not explicitly marked. See this page for more details.
In the Ace Attorney series (excluding the spin-off, Ace Attorney Investigations ), the player assumes the part of a defense attorney. The focus is on Criminal Law, which perhaps appeals more to the public. After all, who would want to defend a husband against his wife in a divorce? The player must collect evidence and talk with potential witnesses to build their client’s case, and earn a Not Guilty verdict by the end of the trial.
When the Ace Attorney games were first launched, Japan’s statute of limitations for murder was 15 years. (Later, it became 25 years. As of now, murder is completely free of the statute of limitations. Let’s take this information with a grain of salt; the creators absolutely couldn’t see this coming). After that, you could get away with murder.
That is a misconception. An appeal means that a higher court will review the facts of the case, and never the same court. As we can clearly see, the same judge presides over both trials.
Double Jeopardy in Ace Attorney. The Double Jeopardy Clause means that if someone is prosecuted once for a crime, they can’t be prosecuted again for the same crime. It doesn’t matter whether they were acquitted or convicted. This is true both under the American Law system and the Japanese Law system.
Because the trial is initially only about Bullard’s murder, it shouldn’t suddenly involve larceny and false identity. The court session has to discuss only the initial charges, and nothing else. Since his sentence (albeit wrongfully) says that he didn’t kill Bullard, didn’t steal the Urn and, most important of all, was not Mask☆DeMasque, he is acquitted of all of these charges. With this acquittal, if he’s ever tried again for any of these charges, he can invoke the double jeopardy clause and get away with it. And he’ll be laughing while doing so, just like Mask☆DeMasque would.
The agreed-upon crown jewel of the Ace Attorney series, Trials and Tribulations allowed players to act as three different attorneys throughout the game while also bringing back important characters that make sense in the plot, rather than “just because." If being able to play as Mia Fey wasn't enough to earn first place on this list, then Phoenix Wright's college backstory most certainly is.
With the Ace Attorney series nearing its 20th anniversary, it seems fitting to look back on the series so far. Each of its 11 games has tried something new, always experimenting and testing the best ways to tell a court-based visual novel.
In this game, players act as a new character, Apollo Justice, representing a passing of the torch from Phoenix to his “apprentice” figure. This signalled that Phoenix’s saga had come to a close (or so it seemed to indicate), and players were able to see characters grow and evolve during the 7 years that had passed since the last game.
Another hidden gem of the Ace Attorney series, many have played Ace Attorney Investigations 2 through the outstanding fan translation available online. Not only is this another Japanese-exclusive game in the series, but it also stands out as another sequel better than the original.
The game doesn't shy away from comedic moments either, having its share of fun with clowns and amnesia plots, but will throw you for a loop with its last case. No exaggeration : Justice For All has one of the most intense moments of conflict and grey morality in a video game to this date.
This ranks lower on the list due to its being a crossover, containing Professor Layton-style puzzles and therefore less actual Ace Attorney gameplay. The only main series characters that make an appearance Phoenix and Maya (and Edgeworth, briefly.) Nevertheless, this game is a worthy tribute to both series, with wonderfully-crafted 3D models and excellent music throughout.
Courtroom No. 9 was used in the trial of Lana Skye for the murder of Bruce Goodman .
Courtroom No. 1 was used for the trials of Maya Fey and Phoenix Wright for the murder of Mia Fey .
Courtroom No. 3 was used for some pivotal trials for Phoenix Wright, including his only official loss. The trial of Machi Tobaye for the murder of Romein LeTouse led to a trial held under the revived Jurist System, namely the trial of Vera Misham for the murder of Drew Misham.
Courtroom No. 4 was used for the following trials, including Mia Fey's as well as Athena Cykes' first trial:
Courtroom No. 2 was used for the debut trials of Phoenix Wright and Apollo Justice, as well as Mia Fey's second trial, all against prosecutor Winston Payne. They are included in the following:
The judge's seat is positioned in the elevated desk overlooking the rest of the courtroom. This is where the judge will sit to mediate trials and (in a bench trial) hand down verdicts. The defense bench is the table positioned to the judge's left. It is where the defense team stands during trials.
The series was created by Shu Takumi, who wrote and directed the first three games. The first game was conceived in 2000 when Takumi's boss at the time, Shinji Mikami, gave him six months to create any type of game he wanted to; Takumi had originally joined Capcom wanting to make mystery and adventure games, and felt that this was a big chance for him to make a mark as a creator…

The localization of the first game was outsourced to Bowne Global, and was handled by the writer Alexander O. Smithand the editor Steve Anderson. While the Japanese version takes place in Japan, the localized version is set in the United States: because one of the episodes involves time zones, they had to specify where the game takes place, and chose the United States without thinking a lot about it. The Japanese justice system of the original still remained intact in the loc…
The Ace Attorney series has been well received by critics, and has performed well commercially: in December 2009, it was Capcom's 9th-best-selling series of all time, and in October 2010, they called it one of their "strongest intellectual properties", with more than 3.9 million units sold worldwide. By December 2013, the series had sold over 5 million units. In the United States, the first game became surprisingly successful, forcing Capcom to prepare at least three additional r…
