The long-running series has a cast and crew that are very recognisable to fans of the series, so much so that Capcom has crafted spin-off titles that either include Phoenix and crew, or taps deeper into what made the series successful. Ace Attorney Investigations, and its sequel Gyakuten Kenji 2, took fan favourite prosecutor Miles Edgeworth, teamed him up with the almost-useless Detective Gumshoe and propelled them into their very own investigatory game that puts a new spin on familiar elements we’ve seen in the main games to date.
You’d be forgiven if you haven’t heard a lot about Capcom’s Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney series. Known in Japan as Gyakuten Saiban (Turnabout Trial) it’s not a catch-all game like FIFA, but along the franchise’s almost 15 year lifespan, it’s steadily grown a cult following that’s dedicated to creator Shu Takumi’s visual novel, lawyer-sim, and it shows no signs of slowing down. With a weird cast of ever-growing characters, including attorney Phoenix himself, his assistant Maya, his rival Miles Edgeworth and his protegé Apollo Justice, the well-established characters have been in the minds of franchise fans for well over a decade, and there’s plenty more in store for series stalwarts.
The presumption of innocence (known in Latin as “proof rests on he who declares, not he who denies”) goes back to at least the Digest of Emperor Justinian the Great in the sixth century AD and is attributed to the jurist Iulius Paulus Prudentissimus in the second century.
For one thing, objections have to be presented based on perceived violations of judicial or statutory rules, such as the hearsay rule. Objection has nothing to do with the witness incorrectly stating the facts (unless the objecting attorney has a reason to believe the witness is perjuring himself intentionally).
The United States Constitution’s Sixth Amendment demands, “In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy trial.” The Framers probably didn’t mean the day after getting arrested, though. The Speedy Trial Clause hangs a ticking clock over the prosecution to try the case or drop its charges so the accused don’t languish in jail indefinitely. In the games, the prosecution is basically thrown whatever slapdash investigatory evidence the police unearth at the crime scene the night of the arrest and then has to make a compelling case out of it. Of course, this would sound laughable to us, but since we are already starting with deletion of the presumption of innocence, it suddenly seems a lot less funny.
