Jameis Winston. Jameis Lanaed Winston ( / ˈdʒeɪmɪs / JAY-mis; born January 6, 1994) is an American football quarterback for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL). Born and raised in Alabama, he was a highly regarded quarterback in high school and led his team to the state championship as a junior.
He played college football at Florida State, where he became the youngest player to win the Heisman Trophy and led his team to victory in the 2014 BCS National Championship Game during his freshman year. Declaring for the NFL after his sophomore season, Winston was selected first overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2015 NFL Draft .
Winston threw for 199 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception as the Buccaneers lost 38–35. Two weeks later, in a 24–17 win over the Carolina Panthers, Winston completed 20 of 30 passing attempts for 249 yards and two touchdowns, breaking the franchise record for passing touchdowns in a career with 81.
In his sophomore and final year, the Seminoles advanced to the Rose Bowl, part of the College Football Playoff. Winston also played on Florida State's baseball team. Winston was drafted as the first overall pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2015 NFL Draft .
During Week 6 against the Arizona Cardinals, Winston left the game with an apparent right shoulder injury. The next day, October 16, Winston suffered a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder, but he stated that he could play through it. During Week 9's loss to the New Orleans Saints, Winston was taken out of the game with the same shoulder injury. Head coach Dirk Koetter announced the next day that he would miss at least two weeks to rest his shoulder. While on the sideline, Winston initiated an altercation with Saints rookie Marshon Lattimore, while being assisted by teammate Mike Evans, for which Winston was fined $12,154. In the game, Winston became the second-youngest player in NFL history to reach 10,000 career passing yards, four days older than record holder Drew Bledsoe. He missed the next three games due to injury and returned in Week 13. Overall, Winston and Buccaneers struggled to a 5–11 record. Winston finished the 2017 season with 3,504 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
Winston chose Florida State in part because he was allowed to play for the Florida State Seminoles baseball team in addition to football. A switch-hitting batter and a right-handed thrower, he played as an outfielder and a pitcher as a freshman in 2013.
On June 21, the NFL announced that he would be suspended for violating the league's personal conduct policy, regarding his latest incident where he allegedly groped a female Uber driver. On June 28, the announcement was made official, giving Winston a three-game suspension to begin the 2018 season.
Winston’s attorney, David Cornwell, dismissed the lawsuit as a stunt, saying, “Ms. Kinsman’s false accusations have already been exposed and rejected six times. This time will be no different. Mr. Winston welcomes the opportunity to clear his name with the truth.”
Florida State University has reached a $950,000 settlement with a former student who sued the school after alleging she was raped by Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jameis Winston, school President James Thrasher said in a Monday statement.
Though Thrasher said in his statement that Kinsman will receive $250,000 of the settlement and her attorneys will get $700,000, Kinsman’s lawyer, John Clune, told CNN that was not true and the attorneys fees “are not going to be anything close to $700,000. … We had no need to break down that amount.”
The case began in December 2012 when Winston was a top recruit for Florida State but wasn’t yet playing on the team.
FSU said in October 2014 that Winston told the athletics department of the allegation, but the department did not initially file a report with the school’s Title IX administrator because no charges were filed and because other players who were with Winston said there was no assault.
Clune pointed to the settlement document, which provides the breakdown cited by Thrasher but also notes in the following paragraph that the breakdown “does not necessarily reflect the allocation between Kinsman and her counsel.”
No charges for FSU's Jameis Winston in alleged 2012 rape. A Florida prosecutor announced Thursday that he will not be charging Florida State University quarterback Jameis Winston in connection to an alleged rape on Dec. 7, 2012.
However, State Attorney Meggs told CBS News’ Crimesider last month that when he finally received the case on Nov. 13, police still hadn’t taken Winston’s DNA. Meggs said he told investigators that “things needed to be done” in the case and asked them to come back to him ...
When Winston’s DNA was eventually tested against evidence taken from the woman’s underwear, it was a match. Meggs said in the press conference that another DNA sample was found on the woman's shorts. "She acknowledged having sex with her boyfriend," said Meggs. "But she wouldn't tell us who her boyfriend was.
Meggs said the boyfriend did not speak with investigators, but that they did obtain a DNA sample from him. Winston’s attorney, Tim Jansen, indicated to reporters on Nov. 21 that sex between Winston and the woman was consensual and that his client did “nothing wrong.”.
Winston married his wife, Breion Allen, in a private ceremony held at their home on March 27, 2020. They have two sons together.
