The California Attorney’s Bar Examination is an abbreviated version of the California Bar Exam. Out-of-state Attorneys licensed for more than four consecutive years in another jurisdiction who remain in good standing can opt-out of the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE).
The Attorneys exam is an all-day exam consisting of 5 essay questions and one Performance test. Attorneys exam applicants have one hour to complete each of the essays and 90 minutes to complete the Performance test.
Applicants are expected to know the California Rules of Professional Conduct in effect at the time the exam is administered (current law). The rules were substantially revised effective November 1, 2018 . Minor amendments were made subsequent to that date.
Applicants whose addresses change after filing their applications are encouraged to notify the Office of Admissions of a change of address as soon as possible. Applicants are able to update their admissions file with the new address by accessing their account through the Applicant Portal.
Results from the February 2022 Bar Exam are scheduled to be released electronically through the Applicant Portal to applicants after 6:00 p.m. on May 6, 2022. At 6:00 p.m. on the day results are posted, applicants can also access the pass list on the State Bar website.

2. MATERIALS USED TO PASS THE BAR EXAM. The most well-known bar prep courses are Barbri, Themis and Kaplan. My recommendation for the bar exam is to use Barbri as the bar prep course. There are several other bar prep courses available on the market that are cheap.
What this means is, you must identify issues, write down rules and do your analysis all within 1 hour. (just like you are attempting an actual exam) Even if there are 10 rules you need to mention, identify the 5 most important, address them properly and the rest 5 can be done in an outline manner.
If you take the full General Exam, 50% of your score will depend on five essays and one performance test, and the other 50% will depend on the MBE. You will pass if your overall composite (average) score is 1440 or higher (1390 or higher as of the 2020 October exam).
Take that into consideration when you make your decision. If you can’t hit 1390 scaled on the written portion (roughly at least an average raw score of 60), you can balance it out with a higher MBE score.
Also, the pass rates are NOT always lower for the Attorneys’ Exam! For example, check out the statistics for 2019 February here. You can find the rest of the stats here. However, pass rates don’t indicate the difficulty of the Attorneys’ Exam itself since the essay questions are the same as those of the General Bar Exam.
Most experienced attorneys tend to overestimate their writing ability on the essays and especially the performance test, for good reason. They come to find (sometimes too late) that writing like a bar taker is different from writing like a lawyer. Take that into consideration when you make your decision.
