While developing the Nintendo DS version of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations, producer Motohide Eshiro had the idea of making a spin-off series based on a major character in the Ace Attorney series. He ran into Takeshi Yamazaki and suggested the idea to him, and Yamazaki agreed to work on it.
Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth wasn't translated in any non-English language. This decision was met with disappointment from non-English-speaking fans of the franchise.
Nintendo World Report gave the game 8.5/10 and said "Ace Attorney Investigations is quite possibly the best entry in the series, as it changes up the tried-and-true formula enough to keep it fresh, while retaining the style and witty dialogue of the previous titles." They gave high praise for the game music and art style, but complained a little on the method of controlling Edgeworth with the touch screen. Investigations is more similar to "point-and-click" adventure games than the text-adventure style of previous games in the series. During investigations, characters appear as small sprites standing at a specific point in an area rather than as large sprites facing the player. Edgeworth and his various partners also appear in the same manner, and the player is able to move Edgeworth around freely. Many gameplay functions return in similar, if not identical, forms to those in the previous games.
Gregory Edgeworth was a very talented criminal defense attorney and his son Miles idolized him. Such was this adoration that Miles wanted someday to become a defense attorney just like his father, and even intervened in a class trial to defend an innocent classmate accused of stealing his own lunch money.
Name. "Edgeworth" may come from "edge of a sword", just like his Japanese surname " Mitsurugi " (御剣), which contains the kanji for sword. This may be a reference to both Gregory and Miles Edgeworth having sharp minds and being "worthy" opponents for Manfred von Karma and Phoenix Wright, respectively.
During his investigation into the crime, Gregory butted heads with Manfred von Karma, a legendary prosecutor with a perfect win record. As he and Shields became more involved in the case, he realized that von Karma wasn't just keeping him away from the scene because he didn't want the defense gaining any sort of advance; he was actively trying to hide something. Even Tyrell Badd, the detective who was supposed to lead the investigation, was continually stymied by von Karma's authority, and he eventually decided to ally with Gregory. Eventually, Gregory was able to figure out what von Karma was hiding; the body of the victim had disappeared before an autopsy could be carried out.

Ace Attorney Investigations is a single-player adventure game in which players control prosecutor Miles Edgeworth, who investigates five cases. The game is mostly presented from a third-person perspective, occasionally switching to a first-person view when examining evidence. Each case involves playing through several investigation phases and rebuttal phases.
The story is split into five episodes, each focusing on a different crime, and tying together to form an overarching story revolving around an international smuggling ring. Public prosecutor Miles Edgeworth is the main protagonist and among the supporting characters are police detective Dick Gumshoe; Edgeworth's long-time partner and prosecutor Franziska von Karma; the rival character who first appeared in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney − Justice for All. New characters are female assistant partner Kay Faraday; the self-proclaimed Yatagarasu (a legendary thief who works to expose illegal corporate dealings), veteran police detective Tyrell Badd and new rival opponents Shi-Long Lang; an Interpol agent from the fictional country of Zheng Fa who bears a fierce hatred of prosecutors and the courts after his family's reputation was tarnished by a corrupt prosecutor, and his assistant Shih-na.
Ten years prior to the game's present, the secretariat of the Cohdopian Embassy was accused of murdering Cece Yew, a witness to a smuggling ring's connection to the embassy. Prosecutor Byrne Faraday and detective Tyrell Badd attempted to convict the secretariat, but he went free after key evidence was stolen. Feeling that the justice system was powerless to those who stand above the law, Faraday, Badd, and Yew's sister Calisto, started stealing corporate files detailing illegal or unethical activities and exposed them to the media, under the name Yatagarasu. Three years later, another murder occurred at the embassy. During the trial, in which Faraday was the prosecutor, the suspect, Mack Rell, claimed that he had been told by Faraday to commit the murder, and said that Faraday was the Yatagarasu. A recess was held to replace Faraday with another prosecutor, Miles Edgeworth; before court was reconvened, both Rell and Faraday were found dead. Edgeworth discovered that Calisto had murdered Faraday with help from Rell, then killed Rell and made it look like Faraday and Rell had killed each other. When confronted, Calisto says that she is Yatagarasu, not mentioning her two partners, and that she is part of the smuggling ring. Faraday's daughter Kay is comforted over Faraday's death by Edgeworth, Badd, and detective Gumshoe; she believes her father to be the true Yatagarasu, and vows to catch the fake.
