Denver ordering Bonnie to fire Laurel. (" Was She Ever Good at Her Job? ")
We are immediately thrown into a first-year law class called “How to Get Away with Murder” and taught by high-powered criminal defense attorney Annalise Keating. From the get-go, Annalise comes across as a proud, strong woman who is not willing to take crap from anyone. She can also be a bit arrogant and unforgiving (don’t lie to her).
Despite this show being a legal thriller and a crime show, we don’t encounter much relevant law. There are aspects of the show that are true and are based on how law is practiced, but there are also parts that are completely unreliable and would never occur in the courtroom.
The next episode starts with Annalise declaring that everyone lies and wondering if it’s possible to really believe or know anyone. It’s looking that way in this episode. Annalise has decided to represent Max, accused of killing his wife of 20 years by stabbing her multiple times.
Michaela’s fiancé is visiting and she brings him to meet the team. Her fiancé happens to know Connor from their boarding school days, and when Conner mentions that they hooked up when they were younger, Michaela threatens to call off the engagement.
Ethically speaking, it didn’t take very long for “How to Get Away with Murder” to go right on off the rails and over the bridge into the water. We learn that Keating is discussing a real, active case. A case in which she is representing the defendant who is accused of murder. Not only is she discussing her client’s case, she is giving out confidential information about that case to an entire room of people. One of the most basic rules for lawyers is that our clients are protected by attorney/client confidentiality. Without the client’s permission, a lawyer may not share information about a case. Nor may the lawyer ever share anything that could harm the case. At one point, Keating gives away her entire plan to the classroom.
The first year of law school is very much about shaking out the people who can’t cut it. The attitude of disdain, calling on people and roughing them up, that is exactly what my first day of school was like. Check out this scene from the 1973 movie “The Paper Chase.”. It will remind you very much of the beginning of “How to Get Away with Murder.”.

During the final season, Annalise dealt with her trial, where she was being charged with literally every murder from the show's six seasons — from Rebecca Sutter all the way to Sam Keating. In the end, Annalise really did "get away with murder" and won her case, with the jury finding her not guilty on all charges.
During the finale, Frank was dealing with the latest bombshell that he was actually Sam and Hannah Keating's son — yes, there was an incest plotline in these final episodes.
In the penultimate episode, Bonnie was the one who told Frank the truth about who his parents were, which led to Frank walking out on her during the finale. In the final moments, Bonnie tried to stop Frank from killing Birkhead, but she didn't make it to him in time.
During the final season, Connor took an immunity deal from the FBI and had to testify against Annalise. The deal included jail time, but he later learned that Michaela got one without jail time.
During the series finale, Oliver tried everything he could do get Connor a new immunity deal. He even went to US Attorney Lennox and Special Agent Lanford, who agreed to give Connor a new deal if Oliver testified against Annalise and lied on the stand. Connor, of course, didn't want this for Oliver and didn't agree to it.
As I said above, Michaela managed to get an immunity deal that didn't involve any jail time. After Annalise won and Connor was arrested, Michaela tried to call Laurel for some support, but she learned that Laurel had changed her number. Also, Oliver told Michaela that it should've been her going to jail.
During the penultimate episode, Laurel arrived back in town, and although she originally lied on the stand about Annalise, she ended up changing her statement. During the series finale, Laurel was relieved when Annalise won, and ended up fleeing town again with Christopher after the trial.
The show stars Viola Davis as Professor Annalise Keating, a cutthroat (as in, she might cut your throat) defense attorney who also teaches Criminal Law 100—or, as she likes to call it, HOW to Get aWAY with MURder — at the fictional Middleton University. Since this is ShondaLand, some crazy shit goes down.
