Michaela and Oliver use Tegan's computer to access Antares' files, only to find a cease and desist letter the firm sent to an Antares employee who was murdered. With all her secrecy, Asher begins to doubt Michaela. Frank asks Laurel if the baby is really Wes', making her angry and distraught for cheating on Wes.
Foul play is suspected in DA Todd Denver's sudden death. Jorge Castillo calls Laurel, inquiring about the whereabouts of Sandrine, but Laurel says she doesn't know. The Keating Four—along with Oliver, Frank, and Annalise—are worried about the missing hard drive. Nate manages to recover Dominic's phone, the hard drive, and Denver's files on everyone. He lies to Bonnie, telling her that he destroyed their files. Believing that Simon is becoming a threat, Michaela calls ICE to have him deported. Annalise persuades Tegan into jumping ship to bring Jorge down, failure of which she might be charged as his co-conspirator. Annalise decides to call a truce by giving the hard drive to Jorge in exchange for giving up his custody battle—he is later arrested on multiple criminal charges, including Denver's suspected murder. Connor confesses that he actually failed out instead of dropping out, but applies to re-enroll. SCOTUS rules in favor of Annalise's class action. As Nate peruses the files, he finds out there is an unnamed presumed dead or missing child perceived to be alive. A young man, Gabriel Maddox, enrolls at Middleton, catching Frank's attention.
As Annalise tries to certify her class action law suit, the attorney general targets her alcoholism in an attempt to take her down, forcing her to figure out a way to rule out those accusations. Annalise also drops Isaac as her therapist after his ex-wife tells her that she is triggering him and may be threatening his sobriety. Asher convinces Laurel, Michaela, and Oliver to tell Frank about their plan, hoping he'll convince them out of it. Instead, Frank agrees to help them, as they are all intent on getting justice for Wes. Later that night, Connor proposes to Oliver, who reveals what the others have been up to and that they know who killed Wes.
The Keating Four try to move on with their lives by getting interviews at the Middleton Law job fair. Nate suspects Annalise is plotting something when he finds out Bonnie is working for the DA's office. With aid from Connor, Laurel continues to investigate her father Jorge's company and his involvement in Wes' death.
The cast features nine major roles receiving star billing, all of them returning from the previous season. Viola Davis portrays the protagonist of the series, Professor Annalise Keating, a high-profile defense attorney, teaching a class at Middleton University. Billy Brown portrays Detective Nate Lahey, Annalise's boyfriend. There are four students who work at Annalise's law firm. Jack Falahee portrays Connor Walsh, the ruthless student. Aja Naomi King plays Michaela Pratt, the ambitious student who wants to be as successful as Annalise. Matt McGorry continues portraying Asher Millstone, a student who comes from a privileged background. Karla Souza portrays Laurel Castillo, an idealistic student. Charlie Weber plays Frank Delfino, an employee of Annalise's firm who is not a lawyer but handles special duties requiring discretion. Liza Weil plays Bonnie Winterbottom, who is an associate attorney in Annalise's firm. Conrad Ricamora portrays Oliver Hampton, a hacker who is in a relationship with Connor.
Michaela and Asher are still hashing out their breakup as Asher packs his things and prepares to move out. Asher doesn’t believe Michaela regrets cheating on him and calls her evil. The prosecutor Bonnie previously tried to flirt with to get the DA’s office to dismiss Isaac’s case is now in charge of the DA’s office.
Nate is doing his own sleuthing and finds a decades-old case listed as active in Denver’s database. He tells the police that they’re looking into old cases to find people with grudges against Denver and goes to an old evidence locker. There is something in the locker, despite the case being supposedly closed for decades.
Why? Because it was all a set-up. As Jorge is leaving the hospital, he is intercepted and arrested by the FBI. They tell Tegan that he’s in custody, because now that we flash back to her meeting with Annalise, we see the continuation of their convo. While ordering Annalise to get out and reading off legal code citations, Tegan also wrote on a piece of paper, “I’m in.” She turned whistleblower to the FBI in exchange for full immunity and is listed as Jane Doe in the case paperwork, so she can go back to Caplan & Gold and her colleagues will be none the wiser.
Annalise gets a call from Nate, and he’s surprised her phone isn’t blowing up, because guess what else is on the news? The Supreme Court has ruled in Lahey v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and Annalise won. This is a huge victory for her, the Keating Four, and the reformation of the criminal justice system. The whole gang gets emotional on Bonnie’s couch as the news declares Annalise “a legal powerhouse on a national level.” (Recap continues on page 3)
But first, the FBI want to talk to her because she’s also the last person who was seen with Denver alive (this is not a good habit to have, Laurel). Frank heads off to New York to look for Mrs. Castillo, while Michaela and Oliver go to visit Simon and Annalise accompanies Laurel to the FBI.
Annalise tells Tegan that Jorge killed the district attorney , but Tegan kicks her out of the office.
Frank admits to Laurel that he went to the hotel and could find no trace of her mother. He wants her to tell him if she did something, but she lashes out and reminds him he’s the sociopath in the relationship. Asher is swiping on a dating app and whining, so Frank tells him he should just forgive Michaela. It’s obvious he wants to but thinks he’s not allowed to because it wouldn’t be manly or whatever. Michaela lied, yes, but they all lie. Connor then tells the entire group that surprise! He’s also been lying this whole time. He didn’t drop out of law school, he flunked out. He was ashamed to tell them the truth, which earns him a hug from Oliver. Annalise arrives and calls Jorge — she has an ultimatum for him and tells him they have the hard drive.
As school resumes after winter break, the campus is abuzz over Sam's disappearance; while Hannah probes, Annalise focuses on a victim of spousal abuse.
When the judge enforces a gag order in Rebecca's case, she takes matters into her own hands; Michaela is surprised by a prenuptial agreement.
Annalise defends a transgender professor against charges of murder, leaving the rest of the team to handle the increasingly tricky Hapstall case.
While the others reel from Rebecca's disappearance, Annalise and Frank keep the truth a secret and covertly try to find the culprit.
Wes, Michaela, Connor and Laurel find themselves caught in a bind before the truth about Lila's death can be brought to light.
After the Dragon King steals his staff, the Monkey King sets off on a mission to get it back. But his greatest enemy proves to be his own pride.
On Sept. 27 at 10 p.m., Annalise and the Keating Four are back in season 5 of How to Get Away With Murder. Last season's finale allowed many of the characters to find a modicum of peace and happiness — but if we know Annalise and this group, that peace will be short-lived. Let's recap everything you need to know before the season 5 premiere.
District Attorney Denver (Benito Martinez) met an untimely end in the season 4 finale — a carefully orchestrated car crash removing him as a threat to Annalise and the Keating Four.
After Simon (Behzad Dabu) suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound to the head midseason , which the Keating Four painted as a suicide attempt, he gradually regained his memory of what happened that night and how he'd uncovered the K4 trying to steal company files. Annalise promised Simon an immunity deal to help bring down Jorge, but in a stone-cold move, Michaela (Aja Naomi King) turned him in to ICE first, leading to his transfer to a Department of Homeland Security facility.
Laurel's plan to steal files from Caplan & Gold to incriminate him ultimately worked. Annalise tricked Jorge into recanting his testimony, releasing Christopher back into Laurel's custody before an FBI sting arrested him for wiretapping, tax evasion, and first-degree murder.
Season 4 saw Annalise (Viola Davis) piece her life back together, finding an unsteady path toward sobriety and clearing her conscience with a class-action lawsuit that went all the way to the Supreme Court.
Season 4's end saw the flickers of a romantic connection between her and Denver's replacement, Ronald (John Hensley) — but Denver's blackmail files also hinted that Bonnie might have a secret child, a result of the sexual abuse she endured as a young woman. Whether or not she's aware of the potential child's existence remains to be seen.
Annalise and the Four believe he destroyed them, but the closing montage revealed he'd kept them for his own purposes. Whatever those may be.
Season 3 of How To Get Away With Murder ended with the death of Wes, one of the shows most beloved characters. It set up Annalise Keating and the Keating Four, to deal with the aftermath in the next season, whew, what a season it was. Season 4 was a rollercoaster ride that involved heavy substance abuse, a stolen baby, a lot of parental interference, and of course, a lot of blood. Does any of this sound familiar? Season 5 of How To Get Away With Murder is almost here, so if you’re asking, “What happened on Season 4 of How To Get Away With Murder because this show is all over the place,” well, you’ve come to the right place.
Why! For some reason, Frank jumps in, too. Simon , a smarmy fellow student, gets involved, and in one big confrontation at the law firm, Simon accidentally shoots himself in the head with a gun that Laurel keeps in her purse. This is not the conspicuous “take Laurel’s dad down” mission that they were hoping for.
Connor turned down Oliver’s marriage proposal and quit school, and Michaela and Asher got internships, mostly because they have to in order to graduate. I think these people forgot that they have to also attend classes to get out of Middleton, which is the Seattle Grace Mercy Death of colleges, because they never seemed to attend them.
