Actresses and producers Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon were announced to have optioned the screen rights to Liane Moriarty 's novel Big Little Lies on August 6, 2014, less than a month after the book's publication. The two of them were expected to develop the project as a film in which they would star and act as executive producers, sharing the latter duty with Bruna Papandrea and Per Saari; Moriarty was also expected to produce. In November of that year, the actresses announced the format's shift into that of a limited-run television series written by David E. Kelley. In May 2015, HBO gave the series a production order and Kelley was announced to join the team of executive producers. That October, Jean-Marc Vallée was reportedly in talks with the project's team to handle directing of the first episode and potentially others. His involvement with all seven episodes was confirmed almost two months later. The series' release date of February 19, 2017, was unveiled in November 2016.
Created and written by David E. Kelley, it premiered on HBO on February 19, 2017, and concluded on July 21, 2019, encompassing 14 episodes and two seasons.
Justified in the adaptation, where she's played by Nicole Kidman. So Beautiful It's a Curse: In the book, she is described as the most beautiful of the women, and the series treats her as such, but it means she and Perry are a beautiful couple, and he's very abusive.
Bonnie Carlson. Played By: Zoë Kravitz. Bonnie is the much-younger wife of Madeline's first husband, Nathan. Bourgeois Bohemian: Despite being fairly well-off, she lives a very New Age bohemian lifestyle (reflected in her decor, her fashion, her preference for organic and homegrown food, her hobbies, and her causes).
She wants to return to work but feels suffocated by Perry's insistence that she shouldn't. Destructive Romance: Celeste is in love with Perry, but aware of how toxic their relationship is and eventually comes to terms with the fact that she's a victim of Domestic Abuse.
Destructive Romance: Celeste is in love with Perry, but aware of how toxic their relationship is and eventually comes to terms with the fact that she's a victim of Domestic Abuse. Even the Girls Want Her: Several female characters remark on her good looks. Hello, Attorney!:
Perry is Celeste's husband. He's rich and successful, but has a violent streak and frequently hits her when no-one's looking. Despite this, he genuinely tries to be a better husband.
Harper then tries pushing Jane's buttons in an attempt to make her snap and vilify the poor woman and her son even further .
Perry had a brother who died in a car accident that happened when she was at the wheel. She belittles Madeline and says that she doesn't like little people. While wearing stilettos. She repeatedly accuses Celeste and Jane of lying about how Perry hurt them, but she lies about her past as an abusive mother.
According to Fox, California law stipulates that circumstances exist in which taking a life to defend not only yourself but also someone else in danger can be justified. It’s called the “defense of others,” and if argued successfully, would clear up Bonnie’s case.
The other members of the Monterey Five are in a slightly different situation from Bonnie. “Technically, the other female characters present at the scene who later lied for Bonnie might be liable for aiding and abetting the involuntary manslaughter as accomplices,” Dagodag explains.
Like the other women, Celeste’s actions could qualify her as an accessory to the crime, or she could be liable for obstruction of justice and concealment charges.
