Out of the $9,000.00 gross settlement amount, you state the attorneys retained $3,000.00 as legal fees, and $300.00 for costs. You don’t state whether or not the attorney kept any other money.
I am very sorry about your situation and the RSD. Since there was no litigation commenced, the only expenses that come to mind are medical expenses. You said you and your wife had lengthy hospital stays - if these were related to the injuries, the health insurance carrier (s) that paid for the hospital bills want to be reimbursed.
This does sound like a small amount from the settlement, although as the other lawyers have pointed out, we don't know any of the facts. You can always seek a second opinion from another personal injury lawyer. Most personal injury lawyers will give a free consultation.
The lawyer should provide you with a written, itemized accounting of how the settlement money is being distributed, & the amount you receive. If you haven't received that detailed accounting ask the lawyer to provide it to you. If you have questions ask the lawyer to explain why each payment was made...
Ask your attorney for an itemized list of the expenses including all of the final negotiated medical bills (your attorney might have given you this list for you). Read the fine print in the fee agreement that you signed when you retained the attorney and check to see that the the settlement funds are being distributed accordingly.
