I recently read a very interesting interview with Dr. Yingguang Liu, who was born and raised in rural China. From as early as he remembers, he was taught atheism, and he didn’t know anyone who had religious beliefs. He lived an impoverished life but was an excellent student. Upon graduating high school, he was accepted into medical school and ended up earning his Bachelor of Medicine degree. Because he had experienced patients with hepatitis, he wanted to find a cure, so he earned his Master of Medicine degree in order to do medical research. However, he quickly became disillusioned. One such person is Jordan Monge, a lifelong atheist and political science major at Harvard . From early childhood, Monge had gained a reputation for tearing down “poorly constructed arguments” in defense of religion. In high school, her Christian friends would avoid talking to her about their faith because of her propensity to deconstruct their beliefs with her razor-sharp, cutting logic. As a student at Harvard, she continued as a religious skeptic, debating fellow students into the wee hours of the morning in defense of her position that religion was a farce. Over time, however, the thoughtful responses from Christian friends to her non-belief pressed her to start doubting her doubts. Increasingly, the way of Jesus made sense to her. As she considered the cross of Jesus in particular, Christianity became not only plausible, but beautiful. She wrote about this part of her journey:

Lewis points out, true love is a voluntary union of free individuals giving themselves to each other for their mutual delight and for the mutual enjoyment of life and all its blessings. Consequently, when God created the first human beings, He gave them the gift of free will.
At the wedding feast in Cana (recorded in John’s Gospel), Jesus, as God the Creator incarnate, also turns water into wine, but here again the conversion process is localised and speeded up. Exactly the same parallels apply to Jesus’ miracles of healing.
But the problem with free will is that it can be corrupted and misused.
It is what lies behind the famous biblical story of the ‘Fall of Man’ in the Garden of Eden: our ancestors disobeyed God, with deadly consequences for themselves and posterity. a creature rebelling against its Creator, Lewis argues, is like a plant refusing to grow towards the sunlight.
