I've never actually given Edgeworth the wrong item in that situation. Did the game let you try again until you handed over the right thing? Or did the case proceed as normal? If so, if Franziska doesn't show up during the trial, and you get the bad ending because of it, then you'll know not to give Edgeworth the wrong item.
