Fearing the worst, Misty later summoned Dahlia Hawthorne so that Pearl would not be able to. At the Inner Temple garden, Hawthorne attempted to kill Maya, but Godot appeared from behind and stabbed Hawthorne in the back with the sword cane, resulting in Misty's death.
Will Powers is an actor best known for playing the titular role in The Steel Samurai: Warrior of Neo Olde Tokyo. He was the defendant in the murder of co-star Jack Hammer, being Wright's first client since taking charge of Wright & Co. Law Offices. He was also a witness for the murder of Juan Corrida.
Unfortunately for the action star, during the struggle Vasquez accidentally pushed him onto the same iron fence that had ended the life of Manuel, and he was impaled through the heart. Vasquez proceeded to cover up this murder, with the aid of Sal Manella.
At the Detention Center, Maya told Wright that she knew she had to save the trial, hence her outburst. She assured him that, as soon as the paperwork was done, she would be free to go. However, her spiritual powers were still weak from not training, so it was impossible to summon her sister Mia Fey for help.
In this episode, Phoenix's rival in the courtroom, Miles Edgeworth, is arrested for the murder of a former defense attorney. Phoenix takes to his defense, and the veteran prosecutor opposing him is Manfred von Karma, Edgeworth's mentor. In resolving the case, Phoenix reveals a connection to the unsolved DL-6 Incident from fifteen years prior - a case that greatly impacted Miles due to the victim's identity. This episode also reflects upon the Class trial, an event going back to when Miles, Phoenix and Larry Butz were all in school, and motivated Phoenix into becoming a defense attorney.
At the defendant lobby, Gumshoe told Wright that the police had found the caretaker, and that he was going to testify. When the trial began, von Karma was strangely cooperative of the process, answering the judge's questions and even telling Wright to cross-examine the witness. The caretaker testified that he figured that he had nothing to do with the incident, and he had gone to buy food for Polly. Wright ignored this excuse and insisted that he did have something to do with the case.
Trial. Phoenix Wright's opponent was Manfred von Karma, Edgeworth's mentor, who had never lost a single case in his 40-year career. Von Karma quickly assumed control over the judge and the courtroom. First on the stand was Detective Gumshoe, who testified that Edgeworth was arrested on the spot.
While incarcerated in the detention center, Edgeworth says, "So, you've come to laugh at the fallen attorney?", which mirrors what April May says in Turnabout Sisters while in the detention center herself ("Have you come to laugh? Yes, laugh at the fallen Miss May!"). Edgeworth also says a similar line in Bridge to the Turnabout when Wright encounters him after an earthquake causes him to let a defendant escape from him.
In his testimony, the caretaker claimed to have seen a boat after hearing a gunshot. After hearing the gunshot, he had seen a man walking by him near the shop. He also claimed that the fog was thick, but that he had seen his face nonetheless. When Wright questioned this statement, the caretaker claimed that the man was Edgeworth, and that he was certain of this. von Karma had lured the defense into a trap. Wright's objections were overruled, and Edgeworth was declared guilty. Just then, Larry Butz burst in, demanding to testify about what he had witnessed on the night of the murder. Despite von Karma's protests, the request was granted with a short recess.
However, visiting hours did not begin until 9 AM, so they would have to wait. Pearl then asked Wright if he was going to represent Engarde. The latter responded by saying yes, partly because he was forced to by the kidnapper. However, when she asked Wright what he would do if Engarde turned out to be the real killer, he suggested they ask Engarde first, stating that thinking "bad things" wouldn't change a thing.
In a turn of events, Phoenix's current rival, Franziska von Karma, is wounded by Maya's kidnapper, and so his old rival Miles Edgeworth takes her place as the prosecutor. Incredible PC game bundle, from $10. Buy from Fanatical.
Upon entering court, Wright saw that von Karma was not at the prosecutor's bench. Miles Edgeworth then entered with terrible news; on the way to court, von Karma had been shot in the shoulder and hospitalized. Wright realized this was the "present" de Killer had promised. Edgeworth stated that he would be taking her place.
Wright showed his client the evidence he had gathered, with the credit card receipt for the stuffed bear being proof that Engarde had been spying on the crime scene. Upon showing him de Killer's calling card, Engarde's reaction confirmed Wright's suspicions: Engarde himself was de Killer's client; he had hired the assassin to kill Corrida.
The murder victim was Juan Corrida, the actor of the Jammin' Ninja in the television show of the same name. The estimated time of death was 8:15, immediately after the awards ceremony. Gumshoe didn't mention any more at the time, but he also let slip that Matt Engarde, the Nickel Samurai, had been arrested on suspicion of murdering Corrida.
Before the start of the trial, Wright received a call from Gumshoe. The detective told Wright that there was still hope; if the police could find Maya soon, he could safely get Engarde a guilty verdict. To this end, Wright was instructed to prolong the trial for as long as he could in order to buy time.
Just then, Mia appeared, having just been channelled by Pearl. She informed Wright and Gumshoe that, while being channeled by Maya, she had seen a circus tent. The only circus in town was the Berry Big Circus, so Gumshoe and the police immediately went there.
